Default Car Rental California

Thanks to all those who responded and gave travel time tips. Much
appreciated.
Next on the list is car rental. Two of us want to rent a car from LA to
Vegas RETURN.
We then want a car to drive LA to San Francisco ONE WAY.

Lonely Planet has good advice but any tips and info from others experiences
please. Recommended company? Insurance? Package deals? How about Driveaways
for LA to San Francisco? Any benefits esp price if car rental organised
through travel agent along with flights? We'll be flying in to LA from New
Zealand.

Thanks in advance.

Two comments. Check prices with insurance. You can sometimes spend
more on insurance protection for the car then the rental costs.

Second make sure that there aren't restrictions on out of state travel.
That has become a controversial issue in the US. Not a problem with
major companies but does occur with "insurance replacement" places and
some small companies. This does appear to depend on the insurance they
have.

Oops one last one. Most small places are well off the LA airport. This
can cost a half hour or so at each end. Don't pinch your time. Shop
around and look for any partner discounts you can find.

For prices, check the individual rental agencies' web sites such as
Hertz, Avis, Dollar, etc. and check the popular travel web sites such as
orbitz, travelocity, etc. As for insurance, check with your credit card
issuer and your local auto insurance company.

Ive just got back to Australia after a vacation in California and got the
following car rental deals.

LA-Vegas one way about US$150 a week tax inclusive for a compact. Use a free
upgrade certificate that I got of the web and got an Oldsmobile something.
Great car. I think the drop of fee incoporated in to that rate was US$40.
Booked at the Alamo website. You should be able to get a weekly rate of
about 115 plus tax.

San Fran-LA one way. 4 days at US$44 a day inclusive of drop off fee plus
tax. Walked into dollar in San Fran. Was supposed to be a compact but think
it was an economy. I could hardly fit in it. A Suziki something.

Any other info you need just let me know.

Hello,

I'm also going to be renting a car soon in CA. I've heard that US cars
have small trunks (boots) compared with our UK versions. What size car
should I get for a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 kids both under 12 with
1 large suitcase, 1 medium size and a medium sized holdall? I was
thinking about an intermediate size. Hertz's website quotes a Mazda 6
or equivalent.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers

Mike

that sounds about right. we had 4 large tube shaped bages(each weighed
between 25 and 32kg) and they all fitted in the boot of the oldsmobile. rent
a compact and find an upgrade certificate online somewhere to get an
intermediate.
