"Bartc" wrote in message m... "Charles Packer" wrote in message ... I waved goodbye to my friend and told her not to wait for me in case I didn't make it. I had no idea what was going to happen. In the end my carry-on and myself were scanned as normal then a special machine was used to 'sniff' my bag. This really puts me off travelling to and from the USA. Another time even routine security involved me having to hold, simultaneously, passport, boarding pass, coat, shoes, carry-on, laptop... It was a circus. More recently, at TFS, passengers had to line up against a counter, before being allowed to the X-ray and magnetic scanners, to deposit most of their small personal possessions in plastic trays. Then they had to line up, holding their bags, coats, and sad little trays of possessions. And if they were lucky they allowed to reclaim their precious belongings on the other side. It reminded me of scenes from WWII. At Honolulu it was the check in staff that were the miserable lot. Not a smile amongst them. They were the ones who put the "SSSS" (or whatever it was to instruct the TSA to give us the works) on our boarding passes. The TSA staff, however, could not have been more polite and friendly. In fact I had quite a good friendly chat with the guy who was dealing with me and I could see the wife and the female TSA smiling and chatting also over the other side of the concourse. They are just doing their job I suppose MC |

I'm not sure it matters if they're looking or not. They're looking for guns, explosives, knives, etc and certainly don't find them reliably. |

And nothing being done at these body screenings is dissuading them either. The 19 that attacked us that day could do it again today by almost exactly the same methods, and would still clear the primary and secondary screenings. Back atcha: How many commercial aircraft in the security- rife industrialized West have been hijacked by terrorists since these procedures were implemented? Apart from the logical fallicy of the question, the primary inhibitors in place today have nothing to do with the body screeners. The cockpit doors, armed pilots, and armed marshalls, along with a passenger population which will attack at the least provocation, are the primary deterrents to past methodologies. The body screeners are a show. They've been demonstrated multiple times to not be effective at actually detecting nor stopping people from carrying on banned items. Their failure rate has been measured at high enough levels to basically make them pointless. Their singular value is to make people "feel" safe. |

If Americans even a few decades ago were the cowards that they are today, they'd all be speaking German now. I doubt it. Every older generation thinks poorly of the younger. I've seen similar comments made just before the first world war on the British youth of that time. DaveM |

Faulty logic. *The bogus procedures have NOTHING to do with REAL security. *They are just window dressing, and ineptly conducted. The 9/11 hijackers used box cutters to gain control of the airplanes. Very few box cutters have made it through the TSA checkpoints. A plastic CD broken in half makes a good cutting edge. Shoelaces and belts make good garrots. Shoes tied together can be used as nunchucks. A broken toothbrush makes a good stabbing implement. All kinds of items can be used for weapons. The cargo holds on airplanes are full of unchecked packages. The one thing that could have prevented the tragedy of 9/11 was locking fortified doors to the cockpit. Have they done that yet? |
