Airlines and checked baggage size limits
I've got a bag, my one and only Samsonite hard-shell suitcase, that measures
about 63 inches total (w+h+d). How "to the inch" are domestic (US) airlines when it comes to this? Are check-in personnel likely to know what "average" means? Which airlines are more likely to let it go without excess baggage charges? The bag is slightly rounded on all sides and when I measure the maximum (widest parts) it comes to 63. I'm looking at flights this week on ATA, Southwest, US Air, and Frontier. All state on their web sites that 62 inches is the maximum. Thanks, -- John English |

John E. wrote: And once it's stuffed, it's likely to measure a bit larger than 63... -- John English The inch limits are for carry-ons. For checked luggage the extra fees are for overweight -- which is 50 pounds, at least on United. Size limits are for only huge or odd shapes, like bicycles, which require special handling. |

Thus spake JimL:

Size limits are for only huge or odd shapes, like bicycles, which require special handling. Not so. Go to any of the airlines web sites and read baggage limitations. For example here's ATA: http://ata.com/traveler_resources/before_you_fly/baggage.html US Air: http://usair.com/awa/content/traveltools/baggage/baggagepolicies.aspx Frontier: http://frontierairlines.com/frontier...k/travel-info- services/baggage/checked-baggage.do Typical wording: "...please remember that each of the two pieces you check can't exceed 62 linear inches (length + width + depth) or weigh more than 50 pounds." -- John English |
