Woman Rescued From Cruise!
I was on this cruise, and this was the third evacuation I personally was
aware of ... The upper deck was cleared and the rear of the ship cordoned off. I couldn't tell if the helicopter landed or lowered a basket. On the way to our first port of Jamaica, we stopped in Grand Cayman for a gentleman who had a heart attack. A tender boat came out, took them ashore and were met by an ambulance. The next day we returned to Grand Cayman for our scheduled port stop, and a young woman was taken off the ship and loaded in an ambulance. I heard rumors of a death, but never heard anything confirmed. Cathy |

Woman Rescued From Cruise!
I watched an evacuation on the Carnival Triumph sailing from NYC to Nova Scotia a few years ago. They did, in fact, lower a basket while the helicopter hovered above. This was not an easy feat, as it was quite windy due to Hurricane Floyd. The sick person was placed in the basket and raised upward to the helicopter. Jo-Ann Edward Todd wrote in message ... How was she evacuated? I haven't seen an area on a cruise ship where a helicopter could land. Lowering a basket seems to risky? Maybe a copter on floats that could land next to the ship on the water and then use a lifeboat to get from the ship to the copter? I dunno, just curious as to procedure here. Edward ---------------End of Original Message----------------- Jo-Ann and others, Coast Guard pilots train constantly. We are VERY GOOD at what we do if I may wave our own flag for a moment. Given the option of a basket rescue or landing on the deck we would always choose the basket. Landing on a moving vessel is much harder than hovering overhead and lowering the basket. We train with the baskets (and slings!). I have personally been involved in several cruise ship rendezvous. |
