Look, I would be all for smoking if it could kill the smokers in, say, a day or two - they
would be happy and we would get rid of them forever. But it can take thirty or more
*years*, during which they will bother the rest of us to death - sometimes literally.

Smoking is enjoyable because it ameliorates the withdrawal
symptons caused by the addiction to smoking. In other words,
smokers plead to smoke in public so they can have their "fix".

Now that is really idiotic. Smoking kills. If people enjoy the thought of
dying a slow and painful dealth, then go right ahead. Unfortunately they
are also taking innocent men, women and children with them.

Driving kills a million people a year (many of them innocent bystanders,
far
more than are killed by second-hand smoke), and many people do it for
reasons that aren't much more substantial than the reasons why others
smoke.

Because people don't drive with the express knowledge that it will kill
them! Smoking kills brain cells, example # 4,250,125.

Getting back to Irish pubs

We were in Ireland in March 2001 and, much to our pleasant surprise,
found a no smoking bar in Galway City. An Tobar it was called and a nice
little pub it was.

Well, I had business in other parts of the Island and came back to An
Tobar after Easter. It wasn't a no smoking bar anymore.

Strictly speaking, there's already one (cf. The Evin Law of 10 January
2001).

I just came back from Ireland. It looks very much as if the smoking
ban will not be enforced -- most if not all of the county publicans'
associations have said they will ignore it, protesting that they were
not consulted, and proposing instead a phased introduction of
non-smoking areas and improved ventilation (by 2005, I think). The
national association was expected to follow suit at a forthcoming
meeting, last I heard.

In one of the southeastern counties, I think Wexford or Waterford,
they rather cheekily said they would only enforce it if the government
banned the sale of tobacco altogether!

(Apologies if this point has already been made in the thread - while
travelling, I haven't been able to follow it in detail.)
