My criterion is that if the railroad says they have service to a town, I consider that town to have a train station. the same applies to Gubbio the next and nearest train station is Fossato di Vico and again you will have to take a bus I said that Gubbio was connected to Perugia by bus. Fossato di Vico is much farther from Gubbio than Assisi's train station is from Assisi, and trenitalia doesn't claim to serve Gubbio. -- Barbara Vaughan My email address is my first initial followed by my surname at libero dot it I answer travel questions only in the newsgroup well. I think that in any case there is a wonderful church in Santa Maria degli Angeli.. with a small Franciscan church inside and ruins of an old roman temple. Besides, there is a franciscan cloister. You will definetely need to stop in Santa Maria degli Angeli for a visit. as to Gubbio. are you telling me that perugia is nearer to Gubbio then Fossato di vico train station ?? Fossato di Vico to Gubbio 22 kms.. Santa Maria degli Angeli to Assisi is about 4 kms ( from train station to Assisi center ) as to Assisi, it was built on a roman town. there is a small roman museum underground, with a part of the roman Forum. a curiosity is a big fallic symbol. Fallic symbol for the romans meant.. Good luck.. and it was normal to have such thing in houses and in gardens ( a lot of examples were found in Pompei and now are preserved in a secluded room of the Archeological Museum of Naples ) My opinion is Umbria is one of the nicest regions in Italy For sure. only in this region you will see so many original medioeval towns If I well remember, Zeffirelli's Juliet and Romeo was filmed partly in Assisi and partly in Gubbio |

well. I think that in any case there is a wonderful church in Santa Maria degli Angeli.. with a small Franciscan church inside and ruins of an old roman temple. I was not impressed at all by Santa Maria degli Angeli. It's one of those huge pompous basilicas, mostly 17th century in appearance. I was sorry they didn't just leave the little Franciscan church as it was. Besides, there is a franciscan cloister. You will definetely need to stop in Santa Maria degli Angeli for a visit. I would just skip it and go on to Assisi. as to Gubbio. are you telling me that perugia is nearer to Gubbio then Fossato di vico train station ?? No, I was just saying that since there is bus service from Perugia to Gubbio, it might be better to take the bus rather than the train and then the bus. Maybe I'm wrong, I've only made the trip by car. Fossato di Vico to Gubbio 22 kms.. Santa Maria degli Angeli to Assisi is about 4 kms ( from train station to Assisi center ) There's enough of a difference to justify saying that Assisi is served by train whereas Gubbio isn't. as to Assisi, it was built on a roman town. there is a small roman museum underground, with a part of the roman Forum. a curiosity is a big fallic symbol. But the station at SM degli Angeli is called Assisi, and I don't think it's significantly further from the city centre than that at Perugia, if you have ever been to Santa Maria degli Angeli you know it is not Assisi.. Santa maria is at the bottom of a hill.. while Assisi is on the hilltop. Two different towns or villages. I do not know whether S.M. degli Angeli is in the same comune (municipal territory) of Assisi, but I guess so. Definitely it is however linked to the memories of S.Francis as many other places in the high town, because it contains the Porziuncola, the little church where S.Francis died. I've never been there by train, but as far as I remember the distance is not larger than that of other "stations in the plain" for hill towns (e.g. Siena), or from a station to other places in a large city. Not everywhere is like Koeln where the Hauptbahnhof is just on the side of the Dom :-) -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- is a newsreading account used by more persons to avoid unwanted spam. We did take the bus up and down a couple of times later in the stay. Was convenient and timely. The laundromat was near the train station. |

Sounds like an awesome trip. A place to put in between Florence and
Rome is Orvieto. It's up on a hill, and large and alive, and has a really nice duomo too. You can get a hotel room overlooking the duomo. |
