I guess I had head that were charging for drinks, but did not much
about it until I heard announcement today at LGB about the return of
free drink service on US. I think an airline could find a niche by
doing away with all fees like luggage fees.

It wouldn't be a niche then, since Southwest already fills that role.

While it's nice of Southwest to do that, it's really immaterial for many
routes where Southwest is so much more expensive than other carriers
even when you pay $15 to check a bag.

We had a very nice RT trip from BWI to FLL last month. But it doesn't
help when we want to go from BWI to ATL and we are then going to the
east of Atlanta so Birmingham isn't an option.

I avoid US Air whenever I can, but I had to fly them about a week ago, and
noticed that no one seemed to be purchasing soda or coffee. Alcohol was
still flowing pretty freely though.

They did succeed in annoying a lot of people by charging for soft drinks.

I got stuck on three US Air flights a couple weeks ago, there were a
couple soft drink sales, but damn few.

They could save a lot more money by losing the drinks completely and one
flight attendant too, at least for shorter flights.
