Not a question of willingness to pay, but how much to pay. When you look
at the price difference, a "free" airline lunch can cost you as much as
dinner in a 4-star restaurant.

And this is the crux of the problem.

Some of the best coach meals around cost about $12 to airlines. (asian airlines).

For domestic services, you'll looking at max $8.00 for a hot meal.

(Consider that the meal itself is about $2-$3 retail at your grocery
store's frozen meal section, and add in the logistics costs to supply aircraft).

So any suggestions that airlines need to charge more than $15 for a meal
is cow produced fertilizer.

If an airline charges $200 more for a ticket, the meal represents only a
small portion of that extra cost. And obviously, of the only visible
difference to the passenger is the meal, the passenger concludes it is a
$200 meal and certaintly not willing to pay that much for a meal worth
less than $10.

The problem is that on an everyday basis, the only visible difference
now is the meal. Jetblue offers entertainment and good comfort on its
planes. (Yes, legacy carriers offer greater responsability in terms of
missed connections, hotel, meal vouchers, but a relatively small number
pf pax see that difference).

Does this include the extra loading/unloading time of the plane, the
increased risk of the plane being delayed and missing its flight slot?
the customer complaint handling when meals aren't provided exactly as
spec'd etc.

Sure, a meal is never worth more than a couple of quid...

Jim.
