Hi Everyone,

I am hearing from sources the fire was contained to the aft section
and Fincantieri hopes they will still be able to make the April 15
delivery date. Fincantieri is saying the fire broke out in the aft
area of Deck 7 which is fitted with cabins and has affected Deck 8
(cabins) and Deck 9 (public spaces). No determination has been made
as to what caused the fire.

Please reread my post. I never said anything about Carnival Cruise
Line.

Yours was just the lucky one I chose to clarify the situation ...
Sometimes mergers here get confusing ... Here it is only the name of the
corporation and one of the subsidiaries being similar ... Sometimes the junior
partner gets the naming rights if more well known ...
Europe is even worse ... I remember one between 2 German companies where they
owned more of the other company's stock than they did their own ...It was very
confusing sorting that one out ...

And didn't HAL buy Windstar shortly before the merger ???

Fire on newbuild Westerdam (**updated**)
17/10/2003

Fire broke out early today aboard Holland America Line's Westerdam,
under construction at Fincantieri's Marghera yard. The blaze was
extinguished with no injuries, according to Carnival Corp.

In a photo, smoke billows from the aft end of the superstructure,
just behind the ship's funnels. Carnival said the blaze began on the
stern section of the 82,000gt vessel at approximately 7:30 a.m. local
time and was extinguished by 11 a.m.

The extent of the damage could not be immediately determined,
Carnival said. The 1,848-passenger newbuild, the third in HAL's Vista
series, is scheduled for April 15 delivery.
