Default Traveling to Australia OR NZ from Canada?

I'll try and be as brief as possible;

I have been accepted to complete a semester abroad in Hamilton, NZ
from July to November. My initial intent was to fly into Brisbane and
chill on the Gold/Sunshine Coast from May, then fly to NZ in July,
then fly back to the coast at the end of November until late December.

Just called a travel agency and am a bit shocked at the prices. Travel
agent suggests I should purchase a $1,600 + tax ticket that will fly
me into NZ from May to November, and then to Aus for December, then
back to Canada.

Problem is... I've heard such good things about the Gold and Sunshine
Coast, that I'm not sure I want to miss out on 2 months there.

I need help in 2 areas;
- what is a decent airfare price to get from Canada to Aus OR New
Zealand? Do seat sales EVER happen?
- In terms of my above timeline, any recommendations as to whether I
should be visiting NZ or Aus?

Thanks so much! Any input is very much appreciated!
Nadia

Actually $1600 CAN is not that bad.
Where in Canada are you flying from/to?
It may be cheaper to take a cheap airline to LA and then see what you can
get from there.
Alternatively if you are near Vancouver Air Canada has flights from there to
Sydney. Then use Virgin Blue specials to get to Brisbane and to Auckland and
back.

Good luck.

Gerrit

BTW what "good things" have you heard about the Gold Coast and what do you
expect to do there?

Default Traveling to Australia OR NZ from Canada?

I am flying out from Calgary, AB specifically. Managed to find a
student fare for $1,500 with a potential stopover in Fiji...

Thanks for the tip - but well aware it's 'winter' down under at that
time. Although, I was accepted for an international exchange (for a
semester in NZ from July-November 07) so I'm only trying to make the
most of the timing. I've heard that May/June on the Gold/Sunshine
Coast isn't exactly like the winter we have - so I'm assuming it will
be temperate nonetheless. Although I have heard that NZ isn't quite so
temperate... still... no snow though... (unless I hit Christchurch or
the like and manage to get a bit of snowboarding in - yippee!)

Good things I've heard??? Met a few people from the area, and have a
friend from Canada who met a lovely Aus girl and is now living there.
He speaks quite highly of the area in terms of friendly people, great
memories, and the opportunity to learn how to surf and check out any
entrepreneurial opportunities is a big hit for me. I realize it will
be winter for the May/June time I am there - hoping to find a good
wetsuit...

Any recommendations as to hilights of either the Gold Coast area or
Hamilton NZ???

Thank you for the link to Air NZ - Managed to fine one for $1,900
including tax - hoping I might be able to secure a student deal on
that as well so I've sent it off to my travel agent.
