Default Fiji (Military Coup?) & Baggage Query

For a return flight from 8 months in Brisbane, Aus to Calgary, Canada
in December 2007, my sister and I are contemplating a week stopover in
Fiji on the return flight.

Two questions:

1) I've heard recent murmers of a military coup in Fiji and how
voluntary travel should be suspended - how long do these things last?

2) 8 months in Australia will obviously leave us with some heavier
baggage compared to most people down there for 7 to 14 days. Is there
a way to send extra luggage to Calgary (with the stopover in LA) so
we're not stuck with it in Fiji?

Thank you!
N.

There has been a coup in Fiji. The coup leader (and chief of the military -
Commodore Frank Bainimarana) has appointed himself Prime Minister, but it is
quiet enough now! Travel warnings still apply however.

Fiji has been suspended from the Commonwealth, and all travel by Fiji
Government members to NZ and Australia has been banned.

Excess luggage - there are several companies which specialise in this. Here
are two:

It's the third coup in the past few years. Going by the news
here, things are quiet and Bainimarana is in charge. I doubt
you'd have problems; I was there for a week 18 months ago
when things were leading up to this - but it was behind the
scenes and had no effect on our visit.

The latest advisory from dfat looks a bit scary:
http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/Fiji
but it's worth noting that Fiji is not on the "Not to
travel" list:
http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/defer_all.html
or the "reconsider your need to travel" list:
http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/defe...essential.html

Cheers, Alan, Australia

I would check with Foreign Affairs. You can do it through your MP. Canada
has suspended relations with Fiji too. (Commonwealth) They may just give you
a warning but it's worth checking.
