Default First Class in Europe is bull****!

What a scam! First Class and Business Class on European airlines is no
different from Economy Class. It's the same seats separated by a flimly
little curtain that they throw over the seats. I can't believe they get
away with that crap. In some of the planes there isn't even a curtain.
It's just a plastic sign that says Business Class or whatever but the seats
are identical. Oh sure you get an extra drink or a little snackbox but it's
hardly worth paying the huge difference. I can't believe they let the
airlines get away with such a scam.

What scam? Did the airline tell you that the class was something that it
is not?

It's not first class, but business class. More like a full economy fare,
really.

What particular airline are you ranting about?

I've passed through the posh First Class section on British Airways
747s and was quite envious.

The seats are sometimes different but often the same.
The meal is usually a little different, but so what?
The terms & conditions on the ticket is where the real difference lies. Of course, whether
those are worth the price is debatable.

I went from Heathrow to Santiago de Compostela on Iberia last week, and wanted a changable
return date. An economy fare (fixed return date) was UKP170. A changable ticket was
UKP670. Of course I bought a fixed date return and guessed the date I would be coming
back. I actually came back a day ahead of that and had to buy another ticket, which cost
about UKP200. So total cost was UKP370 for two fixed-date tickets rather than UKP670 for
one changable ticket. I don't see the meal I would have got in business class would have
been worth UKP300, so what is the logic behind this pricing structure? Why do people pay
it? What did the airlines gain by having two seats apparently unavailable due to the
unused return portions of my 2 tickets?

Probably not. First Class on BA 747s is right at the very front of the
main deck and you can't walk through it, only in to it. You probably
walked through the new-ish Club World (business) with the bed type
seat pods.

Just think about the money you still had in your pocket after buying a
sensibly-priced ticket.

Yeah but on their 737's flying shorthaul European routes
he's right. The makor difference is that business class flights
(there is normally no first) are fully changeable flexible
tickets , oh and you get free drink too

You still get a free drink on _some_ European airlines in economy,
though I concede the trend has been towards removing that. You get
surprisingly good service on short BA domestic hops, though those are
often quite expensive flights to begin with- ABZ to KOI for example.
Last trip I took on that route, I got a hot sandwich and a G&T in both
directions.

You should get that with any domestic scheduled airline. FlyBe are now
no-frills, but BMI certainly offer it. I think ScotAir still do. Most
airlines flying within Europe do (Aer Lingus don't).

Indeed- I'm trying to think of a domestic or european (not no-frills)
flight I've been on where you didn't get at least a snack and a drink.
