Why hotels turn off air conditioning at night?

I was also in Hong Kong for a few days last week. The temperature at

why anyone other than an eskimo would want to use air-conditioning at
night there at this time of year.

Why?

I have traveled in Hong Kong and Shenzhen and Vancouver and Seattle for
the
pass few years. I have stayed in mostly 4 and 5 star hotels. I noticed
hotels turn off air conditioning around 2AM and turn the air back on
around
6AM. That means even when the air conditioner is turned on and blowing,
but
its not cooled.

This is quite annoying and woke me up every night. Anything I can do
about
it?

What kind of hotels are you staying at? I have never experienced this.
A/C is controlled within each room.
