Traditions are different and Malaysian rules are very hard for westernes, but we have to respect these rules, when we are guest of this country. [snip] Yes to respecting them, but you really found it hard to live by Malaysian rules while in Malaysia? Just which rule was hard for you? Not at all. I ment, it is not easy to keep allways in mind to behave differently as if being at home. Things, that are pretty normal here aren't there, and vice versa (ie. spitting on the ground or in a pot is very normal in many countries, but not here. We have no pots for that. Personally I think it's disgusting, but these people do not care (or not know). We do not have the strict laws to forbid such behaving. Neither would we have the resources to enforce such laws. |

----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Webb" Newsgroups: rec.travel.asia,soc.culture.malaysia Sent: Sunday, April 25, 2004 11:43 PM Subject: Couple holding hands arrested in Malaysia No, you have discrimanatory laws which do not allow ethnic Chinese and Indians the same rights as ethnic Malays. All Australians have equal rights under law, and this is actually followed. Can you explain why there's only very few if any none white minister in Australia. Very few non white people heading or holding high goverment position including the Army, the police force, the Ministry and many more ?. Why is it religious holiday only limited to Christmas not chinese new year or Deepavali ? Why is there no vernacular school in Australia ? In Malaysia we dont have a non apparent system that hinder Non Bumiputra from holding high goverment position (there's lot of Chinese and Indian Ministers/MPs, head of department, high ranking army/police officers (including General) etc). Maybe the quota system in education and bussiness appeared to be unfair to non Bumiputra in Malaysia. However, you shuld be happy to know that this quota system is slowly being discarded. Talking about discrimination, the Malays are equally discriminated. Put it this way, if a Bumi apply for job/scholarships/bussiness deal whatever from non Bumi institution, most likely that they wont get it even highly qualified, or simply because the company has a ruling that they only accept chinese speaking applicant (equivalent to no apparent discriminatory policy, very prevalent especially in the old days). This is not a small matter when 60% of the ownership of bussiness are Non Bumi (long term sequalae of British colonial system). Why are you one sided ?. Maybe you should also talk about the Malays in Singapore who are severely discriminated ? Rowani |

Right, though it doesn't seem that that's why they were arrested, right? Nope. I am guessing it has more to do with the allegation of corruption on the part of the two officials. |

Actually, it's up to anybody who deals with a visitor. It's probably a pretty invariable truth that visitors who show respect for the country and people who are hosting them tend to meet with a much friendlier reception than those who show a total disregard - or worse, contempt - for the pride, sensibilites, and traditions of their hosts. Excuse intruder. He has no dignity. What do you expect from a monkey who would do anything for a banana? |

However it is so dry in UK that I don't have any need to spit at all. My mouth is dry all the time. think it's disgusting, but these people do not care (or not know). We do not have the strict laws to forbid such behaving. Neither would we have the resources to enforce such laws. They will enforce it by their looks and the nicer ones will give nice advise. |

A visible cohesive minority with strong work ethic, placing strong values on education generates visible differences in wealth. The less sucessful and less hard-working majority (with fewer connections) cries "foul". Nothing inherently to do with religion. Excellent summary but let me add a few points. The most successful minorities are mostly those from more developed but overcrowded places, migrating to less developed culturally and physically places. They have the advantage in skills and knowledge as well as contacts with their countries of origin. |
