Default How long? Southern Africa

Hello everyone,

I'm thinking of a trip through Southern Africa next year, together with my
dad who lived in Zambia for 9 years. It's still in the very early stages of
planning, and I haven't done much research yet, but I already found out
that I find it very hard to estimate how much time is needed to cover
certain distances.

Just to give me an impression: how much time would you need for making a
grand tour by car, for example when doing a trip South Africa - Mozambique
- Malawi - Zambia - Botswana - South Africa? Of course we wouldn't want to
hurry. :-)

Thanks.

Regards,
David

All these countries? Your own (or hired) 4x4? No hurry?

I would count in months rather than weeks. I have done several of these
trips and usually we count on one month per country. That is mainly
limited by the amount of time we can afford to stay.

Don't expect you can do all this in say 6 weeks and still have time to
enjoy it and really experience it. You would be driving against deadlines.

Regards,
Hans

Probably a hired 4x4. If you hire a 4x4 in SA, would it be problematic to
take the car into other African countries?

David,

it depends a bit on the rental company. Most companies will allow you
into South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. A few will also allow
you into Zambia. But getting a rental into Mozambique may be very difficult.

My best experience with 4x4 rental is with Britz. (www.britz.co.za) They
have a wonderfull service and their cars are really prepared for the
bush. Quite a difference with some other companies. May look like
details, but once you are deep into the bush you WILL be gratefull.

Regards,
Hans
