XM uses several geostationary satellites--it works anywhere that there
is a clear view of the satellite. The further north you go the lower
on the horizon the satellite is and so the more likely that some part
of the car will obstruct the view when you're driving in particular
directions.

That's why I was wondering if it worked in Alaska. When I was in the
Gaspe peninsula area in Sept 06, the reception was spotty to say the
most. Maybe I'll check alt.culture.alaska (but it looks like the group
is populated by lunatics!).

I didn't have any trouble in Gaspe unless I was on the north side of a
high ridge. I did have to move the antenna from one side of the tank
to the other on occasion though. And it worked fine on the Trans
Labrador where the terrain is much flatter.

Yep....and in summer, they're heliotics! ;-)

Many thanks for the tips!
FWIW, in the Gaspe, as I recall, most of my problems were when
traversing around the north side.
