Leon,
Be more precise, what exactly you like to know because there is so much to tell you about Ethiopia, i.e have you read Loneley Planet (or other detailed travelbooksabout Ethiopia). It's a beautiful country and you can make great pictures! We lived there for three years . Two years ago we went back (trip of one month) and we just returned now (november 2005) for the second time (also a trip of one month). If you need specific info let me know. ================================== Lou Andreoli Human, wildlife & nature photographer http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~louine ================================== "leon" schreef in bericht ... Betty,
About Eritrean border the following. At the time we were in Adrigat (near Axum) there was a concentration of about 40.000 Ethiopian soldiers near the border (that was on the end of October) but they are still there. It was no problem to travel overthere, so the situation is still the same. The situation in Addis Ababa: we where there on the first of November, lot of problems (several oppositionleaders killed), but not a great problem for us as we knew where these problems took place. For both above mentioned "problems" I should say: keep informed in the country itself, as mostly all people (taxidrivers, hotel personnel etc.) know where possible things will occur or what's going on. At this moment it's quiet in Addis. It's a beautiful country and in your situation I would not be afraid to travel there in the present situation. Have a great trip. If you need more info let me know. P.S. My wife has written a book about Ethiopia (Dutch language) with lot's of info about the country and is called "Konjo No". If you are interested the ISBN number is: 90 71794 77 6. Lou, I read your reply to Leon. I am off to Ethiopia next week and as you have been there so recently I wonder if you can tell us firsthand what the situation is with regard to the rioting in Addis and the alleged massing of troops along the Eritrean border. The media often tends to exaggerate these things and the experience of a recent traveller would be useful. Is the rest of the country calm? I'd be grateful for any information you can give me. L -- leon I was there in January 2005. Went by air the historical route, from Addis to Axum, Gondar, Bahar dar and Lalibela (beware of crazy wacko hotel manager there). Food was hard to find, if not uneatable it was with no taste at all with very few exceptions. I may have more info for you, specify whats of interest. /Nisse -- Remove the obvious part before replying by mail please! |

I was busy in the northern part because many european groups where travelling at the same time. At some places we had to make reservations and eat in shifts. I've eaten very well during this trip and the food was very tasty. We had a very experienced tour guide, who knew where to go and lots of time he organised a buffet (both ethiopian food and western food = mainly pasta). Don't expect juicy steaks anywhere. In the southern part of Ethiopia we had to bring our own food to some places (e.g. to the Omo valley). Jan |

We went two times overthere (Northern & Southern region). In the north we never had problems The food was very tasty (also in Lalibela had two fine "restaurants") Don't forget you are in Africa and things are else then in Europe, USA or so. You have to adapt oneself . Into the deep South you have to bring your own food with you or take/hire a cook (inexpensive) ================================== Lou Andreoli Human, wildlife & nature photographer http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~louine ================================== |
