They aren't really important to people who don't believe in that particular
religion. Being ignorant of them is like being ignorant of needlepoint or
platypus reproduction.

Since the question being discussed is about the start of the
Sabbath for Jews at high latitudes, your comment is quite
irrelevant.

But technically, in the winter arctic, if the sun doesn't rise on
friday, there can be no sunset on friday... So sabbath wouldn't happen
if it is based on actual sunset vs darkness.

If it based on darkness, it would mean that the person would have all of
friday in sabbath. And it would be problematic on saturday since stars
would be visible all day. (again, no sunset on saturday).

Obviously, Abraham hadn't thought of northern arctic people when he
accepted the commandments from God :-)

I wonder if "John Doe" knows how many animals Moses had on his ark.

But they are important to Jewish people and to Christians. Your simile
is characteristically inept.

I thought Christians believed Christ saved them from their sins.

A lot of Christians aren't very clear on what they believe, and become
agitated if you ask them.

How many Christians have you questioned about this? And how many became
agitated?

All those who attempt to proselytize, and a few others.

And how many became agitated?

Nearly all of them. Only a fraction of devout Christians have any kind of
solid handle on their belief system, and since most of them subconsciously
have doubts about the veracity of it all, questioning them makes them
extremely uneasy. Of course, this phenomenon isn't at all limited to
Christianity.

Were they all Jehovah's Witnesses?

Only one or two that I can recall. A great many Christian sects actively
proselytize.

CMSWARPSD, it gets complicated this religous long-distance travel
doesn't it? Muslims have a tough time in northern climates, I can tell
you. During Ramadan in a summer period there can be 6 weeks or more
where you can't eat or drink as it does not get dark. I tell you, you
get quite thirsty after a day or two.

The important thing is to believe of course.

It's not a matter of "northern or southern". It is a matter of how far
north or south.
