Default Big-island travel - advice needed.

Hi Guys and Gals,
I am thinking of visiting the Hawaii big island for a 4 day trip. (I
initially thought its too little a time, but since I've been to Kauai
and Maui for 2 weeks just an year back, I would probably not need to
spend any time to absorb the hawaiian culture this time. Besides I
have holiday constraints...)

My plan is to arrive in Kona and see a some big attractions. I am not
a beach person, and except for a few hours of snorkeling I would
prefer checking out some nature, the volcano etc. in the rest of the
3.5 days I've got.
Can anyone make some recommendations for the places of interest?
Which place is ideal to stay : Kona or Hilo?
Would I need a 4wheel-drive to visit any of the key attractions?
Any pointers to not-so-commercial URLs are welcome.

Thanks,
Drizzy

There are relatively few places to stay in Hilo, which gets lots of rain.
Kona is the most reliable place for sun in all Hawaii. There are a number of
places to stay up and down the Kona coast.

Places of interest: Volcanoes National Park, Hamakua coast drive and
botanical garden, Puuhonoa o Honaunau (Old Hawaiians place of refuge, now a
state park).

City of Refuge. Hulihee Palace (It's right in Kailua on Alii Blvd.)
South Point -- the most southern place in the US. Mauna Kea, but it's
a most of the day trip. Waipio Valley -- take the tour down into the
valley. And do visit Hilo (a quaint little place and my girl friend's
hometown), and its Tsunami Museum, Banyan Drive, and Lilioukalani Park.

There's a lot more to see, but you don't have the time.

Kona-side. Hilo gets too much rain -- 135 in/yr average. Double that
up the hill side in the Panaewa Rainforest. Kona is the "dry", good
weather side of the island.

Only if you want to drive yourself into Waipio Valley.

Any pointers to not-so-commercial URLs are welcome.

You are invited to visit my Big Island of Hawaii webpage which offers many
points of interest, things to do, places to see, activities as well as
accommodations including volcano cabins, bed and breakfast locations,
cottages on coffee plantations, etc. It's at:
http://keith.martin.home.att.net/page9B.html - where you'll find no
advertising, no cookies, no pop-ups and nothing for sale. I'm sure if you
spend 4 days on the Big Island, you'll vow to come again for a longer stay.
Bon voyage! KM
