Hallo Safariman - for some years now I have been member of this group and
somehow we have managed to keep it more or less clear of adds. Actually this
is not the place for such adds as it is a newsgroup on travel in Africa. If
you would do a bit of research, you'll find that quite a number of us are
actually in the tourism industry and many of us can probably 'kick your ass'
in the industry. We refrain from such obvious self promoting and use this
newsgroup to discuss relevant issues or to supply meaningful info to one
another.

Would you honor the whole group and please stop this. There are other venues
that are specifically for such adds. This particular group has offered
valuable services to serious travelers and I for one would love to keep it
as a source of info.

Thanx in advance.

Koos,

Thank you for posting your comments regarding blatant advertising.

I am on the other side of the table as an occasional tourist. The topics
discussed on this group are an important source of information and ideas to
use when planning trips. I would never choose an operator simply because
they happened to post an annoying ad in a discussion group.

I think on the other hand that it does not do any damage for people to use a
signature when posting informative replies or bringing interesting
information to our attention. Why not include the name and location of your
organization, your position and a link to your web site in your reply. That
way if we are impressed with the quality of your posts we have an easy way
to get in touch with you if we want to consider doing business.

I understand the Namaqualand was quite a disappointment last year. We spent
a couple of days at Kamieskroon in the beginning of September last year and
the flowers were amazing. This year a friend sent us a picture and all we
could see were a few desolate Vygies sticking out of the sand. He had to
search to find those. That must be hard on the local businesses.

He also said that Richtersveld and Fish River have been combined into a new
transfrontier park. Do you have any information on that and what it means
to visitors?

Hi Koos,

I came accross safariman's posting in a group about lighthouses (!!).
It IS spam and I hope that others will act like I do when seeing these
postings... Not doing bussiness with them... I have a nice list of
companies I will not use because they are spammers. I don't go to
their websites and will NEVER order anything from them. I WILL,
however, always report them with their ISP or violation of the AUP...
It seems to help in most cases and it makes me feel better ;-)

You're quite right Koos.
By the terms of the group's charter, we don't welcome ads:
"This is not a forum for advertising and commercial interests and such
posts will not be welcome. There is nothing wrong with commerce and
advertising, this just isn't the place for it. If you have a product
or a tour, please post your message in rec.travel.marketplace or other
locations."

The trouble is, I think a lot of the spammers don't read the groups.
They just post up their ads and leave.
Probably complaining to the ISP is the best thing, but it often doesn't make
any difference.
Then there's always the Killfile for repeat offenders....

Hi Group and thanx for the impute and support. I too think that these guys
do not really read what is going on here.

When it comes to Namaqualand - we had a very bad rain season this year.
Actually, it is a disaster in some areas of the eastern Namaqualand (called
the Boesmanland) where they had less than 10mm of rain this season.

The problem with operators living outside of Namaqualand but offering tours
into Namaqualand, is that they book long in advance and are then not
prepared to cancel the tours and refund the bookings. Then you have the
situation of tourists arriving here with only empty hills to look at. I was
so upset with this state of affairs that I spoke to the Western Cape
Minister of Tourism about it for I feel it is unethical and it gives
Namaqualand a bad name in the tourism industry. I hope something will be
done about it. Namaqualand is a very unique place with some flowers in some
places sometimes during August and September during some years. A true
"flowering extravaganza" is on average only once in 7 years. And this can
only be determined 2 - 3 months before the time! This makes Namaqualand
extremely difficult to market in the international tourism industry.

The newly created "Namib Transfrontier" Park has been agreed upon and the
first part of it is official now - This is the co-operation of the Fish
River National Park and the Richtersveld National Park into one
transfrontier park. The plan is to incorporate the whole of the Diamond
Coast, other parts of the Greater Richtersveld, the whole of the Namib
Desert from Oranjemund up to the Skeleton Coast, parts of Damaraland and the
Kaokoveld and the Park Nacional do Iona in Angola in this huge park. If it
is created, it will stretch from about 350 km north of Cape Town for about
2000 km along the Atlantic Ocean

I am very exited about this for I feel that it will help the whole region
that has been very neglected in terms of development. In general the peoples
living here, are quite poor. But it will also promote the idea of
co-operation between the governments and the streamlining of services,
border crossings etc. It is actually so sad to think that we welcome the
cross-border migration of wildlife and man is prevented from doing so.
Perhaps one day we will be able to enjoy an Africa without the "schlepp" of
border crossings.

I will try to keep you posted on the development process of this park.

Greetings
Koos
