LEAFING
We are planning a trip to New England this fall and would appreciate any suggestions for our holiday. Has anyone taken a hosted tour? Would like to concentrate on scenery and photo ops. TIA Barb -- Sure, you can trust the government. Just ask an Indian Bobert |

If you're friendly and sociable, it ain't bad. If you prefer your own company, the do your own research and go it alone. We are experienced travelers but not in New England. As a rule we don't care for tours but do take them in areas we are not familiar with. Our time frame is totally flexible, but I'm sure during leaf peeper season reservations are mandatory. Our budget will allow1st class digs, but we don't like hotel resorts. We live in Pebble Beach CA by the ocean, so one charming port village would suffice. My grandson attended Middlebury College so have been there but not to sightsee the area. Many years ago I traveled by auto to the Franconia Notch area and was captivated by the beauty of the fall foliage. We have never been to Upper Maine. We do like B&B's but would appreciate any suggestions. Perhaps a day tour during our travels would be appropriate. Thank you for your timely response. Check http://www.selectregistry.com/default.aspx for good hostelries. We've stayed at several of the Select Registry places, and have been pretty uniformly pleased. |

Barbara in Carmel/Pebble Beach CA I know Middlebury College well and there are some outstanding roads nearby if you wish to revisit the area. As a starter, I'd suggest (in VT) the near-Middlebury Lincoln-Ripton road (Rte 125 to the Lincoln Gap), Stowe, and Barnard (Woodstock); in New Hampshire there are a myriad of choices depending on your timeframe, but don't miss the Kancamangus Highway (http://tinyurl.com/2mwfv4) and Lake Winnapesaukee (http://www.winnipesaukee.com) As to Maine, keep to the coast. You're right to believe that reservations are mandatory. In fact, foliage season is the busiest season for Vermont, and a large part of New Hampshire as well. Email me if you'd like more particular info. Thom |

One cruise starts in Boston and goes up the New England coast stopping in fishing villages and ending up in Montreal, Canada. All along the way there are excursions for whale watching or leaf peeping. http://www.hollandamerica.com/ An other option on land is a rail tour. I am not 100% that the Acadian Rail Company is still operating year round but here's a link that describes the fall tour: http://www.classictrainjourneys.com/no5.htm#alt -- ________ To email me, Edit "blog" from my email address.
