Default more info requested on smoky mountains

Hi all,

I posted about a week ago about a possible late March trip to the Smoky
Mountains. Thanks to all of you, we have decided to do this trip with our
two teenagers. So, just a few more questions...

We plan to stop at Land Between the Lakes, Mammoth Cave, Nashville
(daughter (17 y.o.) is "sick of just hiking in mountains and seeing
waterfalls", so we added this to the itinerary), and Smokey Mountains (for
the poster who suggested these, along with the Arch, the arch would have
added a lot of time to our trip, as we are on the shore of Lake Michigan).

Are there any particular trails/ sites we should definitely see in the
Smokeys or Land Between the Lakes? Nice places to stay? We are considering
staying at the Deer Ridge Lodge (or condos???) near the park (I think about
15 miles away from what I can tell on the map). Any good or bad points
about this place?

Thanks!

Shelly

Sites to check in the Smokies will include Cade's Cove and Clingman's
Dome. You can't avoid Gatlinburg, T-shirt shops and tourist traps, esp.
with teenagers, but it's fun and right there at the foot of the
mountains. Someone else suggested a side trip to the Biltmore in
Asheville; that's a good idea. Be warned: that's a longer drive than it
looks on the map if you drive Hwy. 441 from Tennessee -- not a bad
thing, just make sure you allow a full day if you're driving from the
Tennessee side; I-40 on the way back.

Land Between the Lakes will be quiet in March; the visitors center is
the obvious choice, and several trails lead off from there. Some trails
wind along the lakes/rivers; check out a map when you get there.
There's a wildlife rehabilitation center. Fort Donelson, just south of
the Land Between the Lakes, is a relatively minor but well-preserved
Civil War battle site park. (Franklin, near Nashville, is larger.)
Check out Patti's on the Pier, a very good restaurant in Grand Rivers.
Do not skip dessert. There are chain motels at Draffenville and around
Kentucky Dam Village, but you might check into the state park lodges at
Kenlake (Aurora) or its twin on Lake Barkley (Cadiz). Dine at one of
those if nothing else, for the view over the lake. (Breakfast would be
a good choice.) There are many locally-owned motels in and near Aurora.

Do a search in this group on Google for things to do in Nashville; there
have been a few threads in the last few months.

Cades Cove mentioned before great choice,go morning or dusk place loaded
with deer feeding at those times. Some bear activity depending on time of
year, go mid week avoids crowd. Horseback in Cove ride is good. If you
have teenagers night in Gatlinburg cannot be avoided, take em to Hard
Rock, burgers fajitas decent with fair price, food with entertainment, fun
atmosphere. Ripleys aquarium is cool. check out my webpage for
oliviashideaway.com, I rent my cabin out but also has links to things in
area. email for more info, I live here and have rental info for you
whether my place or not. Cabins are now as affordable as hotels plus save
on food costs, breakfast/lunch at cabin, dinner out saves a ton of money.
