Why do you yanks have such decrepit airliners.
I've just been trying to book a return to Chicago for July, and the only
equipment which American Airlines use to cross the Atlantic are old DC10s. |

That seems odd....I didn't even think American still used DC10s.

My mistake I meant American Airlines ie: Delta, Northwest etc rather than AA. If you see what I mean. |

Very few U.S. airlines use DC-10s at all anymore. Northwest still has some, I think, but they have the oldest fleet of the majors, although it's well maintained from my experience. There are several U.S. airlines, large and small, that have very modern fleets. Continental leads among the majors, also Southwest is right behind. In short, you're making a generalization that just can't be backed up with facts. Northwest is replacing it's DC-10's with new 330's. |

If you see what I mean. Nonsense. Continental doesn't even operate DC10s. It's trans-Atlantic flights are 767s and, I think, 757s. |

They have their fleet plan published on their web site, and it shows they have no plans, over the next two years, to retire any of their existing transatlantic fleet of 757s or 767s. Nor do they have any plans to acquire any additional 777s. It looks like their strategy is to stand pat for the time being. |
