Tasmania
Hi,anyone knows tours in Tasmania for a week? I'll be in Melbourne in
march, and I'd like to spend a week in Tasmania....even alone,it doesn't matter, but in this case ,I need suggestions about accomodations, what to see and what to do,how to travel around, with buses or something else, and so on..... Even if it's better going there by plane (from Melbourne) or catching the Spirit of Tasmania (how about prices?)....I have to say that I definetely don't like the rollong of the ships, and that part of the sea mustn't see very calm! Thanks in advance for Your help! Veronica |

Even if it's better going there by plane (from Melbourne) or
catching the Spirit of Tasmania (how about prices?).... If you've got a car, you might be better off on the ferry as opposed to renting one on Tassie. Otherwise, last time I checked Virgin was a lot cheaper than taking the boat - go figure! |

Thanks in advance for Your help! Veronica Have a look at http://www.discovertasmania.com.au/, if you're in Melbourne before your trip call into the Tasmanian Tourist Bureau for info. For accommodation you can book at www.wotif.com for considerable discounts up to two weeks ahead, there's a wide variety of standards and prices available. As Raffi said, try www.virginblue.com.au for flights between Melbourne/Launceston or Hobart. There are scheduled buses serving the major towns in Tasmania, or you could hire a car. Thanks in advance for Your help! Veronica Just got back a couple weeks ago from 5 weeks in Oz, and we spent 8 days in Tassie. We had free access to a car in Melnourne so elected to take the ferry, but I figured that for our family of 4 it would be about the same cost taking the ferry vs flying and then having to rent a car. I would highly recommend renting a car while in Tasmania as there are a lot of things to see and you don't want to just stay near your hotel. We didn't do any packaged tours, but I don't think they are really necessary (although you would need them if you don't have a car). Here's what we did: - Spirit of Tasmania Melbourne to Devonport, arrives 7 AM - Drive from Devonport to Coles Bay, stayed 2 nights in Coles Bay at Iluka Holiday Center in a cabin - Hiked in Freycinet Park (excellent hiking, especially Wineglass Bay) - could have stayed there for several more days - loved it! - Drive to Hobart, spent 3 nights in Hobart at Blue Hills Motel (OK hotel, decent location) - Salamance Market, Tahune Airwalk, Hastings Caves, Mt Wellington, Cadbury Choc. Factory :-), etc. Needed a car to be able to do all this stuff. - Drive to Cradle Mountain, spent 2 nights at Cradle Mountain Lodge (very nice cabins, although quite expensive! Excellent location!) - Hiking in Cradle Mountain Park - Marion's lookout walk and Dove Lake. Again, very pretty scenery and could have stayed longer. - Drive back to Devonport to catch 9 PM ferry back to Melbourne. We really likes the Spirit of Tasmania as you don't waste a day on flying. You get on the boat at 8 PM, and arrive at 7 AM the next day well rested and ready to go. Hope this helps! Brian |
