Denver and Surrounding Area
Hi All
Travelling to Denver on the 5th June until the 18th. We wish to travel through the surrounding areas. Definite places to visit so far are Yellowstone and the Battle of the Little Bighorn site. I appreciate that in the period we have lots of places cannot be visited. I have been using Streets and Trips but when I have put in all the places I wanted to go, it ran to 2700 miles, which is perhaps a little much. I see also that Yellowstone accommodation is already booked up. Intend staying in Denver first night and perhaps 2 more prior to return flight. Mostly want to spend time on scenic routes. We are in our 60's so lots of walking at that altitude is not needed. Regards Pat |

A nice drive is to go west of denver, through arvada to route 72, north on 93 for a bit, then back on 72 west. North up to nederland, then back to boulder on 119. |

Neither Yellowstone or the Little Bighorn are close by, so be prepared to drive, which isn't that bad in the West as long distances are the norm. There is plenty of scenic views around here, which is why I live in the mountains. You have Rocky Mountain National Park nearby with Estes Park at its top which is very popular to visit and not far from Denver. My wife likes to traipse out I 70 to a spa near Grand Junction and you go by lots of ski resorts which have some activities in the off season. |

So is your plan renting a car from Denver and then driving to these places? |

"PeterL" wrote in message ... June is not winter. Not on the plains but Trail Ridge Road generally doesnt open until mid May and can be closed by late storms in June. The Old Fall River Road is usually closed until July 4th Winters are LONG at higher altitudes, I have been turned back by snow in Glacier NP in the last week of June. Keith |

Denver to Yellowstone is around 500 miles but the side trip to the Little Bighorn site adds another 200 miles. I'd suggest the followin itinerary Denver - Estes Park see Rocky Mountain NP Estes park to Jackson Hole - see Grand Teton NP This is more than 500 miles so consider an overnight stop at Rock Springs and nex day take a side trip to the reconstructed town of South Pass Jackson Hole to Yellowstone - try West Yellowstone or Gardiner for accomodation Yellowstone to Salt Lake City Salt Lake City to Moab for Arches NP and Canyonlands NP Moab to Denver This is almost 1000 miles shorter than your route and far more spectacular. Its a route I did 8 years ago Keith |
