"Thousands of doctors and nurses face the sack after the election

A UK nurse responds after reading the article in UK news.

"As a nurse reading this has made feel ill - I have a family, a
mortgage & 2 cats to feed. It has come as a nasty surprise on my day
off. What makes my blood boil is that I get to read it first in the
media - I've been nursing 28 years now and this is the first time that
I've really believed that I could be sacked. If I and my colleaugues
are disposed of it begs the question "WHO WILL CARE FOR THE SICK?" The
wards of many hospitals are already in melt down - one is asked to try
and attain almost unattainable targets and complete more and more
pieces of work. To my tired and cynical eye it appears that only the
managers get coffee breaks (generalisation I suppose) and the nursing
staff never have enough time in the day to give quality care. I am
cheesed off with the unions and the RCN - they need to really develop
some teeth and tell the politicians to back off - I can assure you
that nurses are sick and tired of the health of the general public
being turned into an economic exercise"

If she's got 28 years in after qualification she's entitled to a full
pension on redundancy at any age over 51. Plus she can then go and work
for one of our many private hospitals for a huge wage on top of her 50%
pension...

This being the case, and all the above prose being in the Daily Mail,
I'm inclined to think that it's all a pack of lies...

As you are well aware, the Daily Mail (and its readers) thinks that
all foreigners are rapists, killers or thieves so you'd better watch
out. There's a simple rule to apply to what you read in the Mail -
proven time and again in the courts - don't believe a word. Well,
"Daily", obviously. And they probably don't falsify the date or price
on the cover. The ads - they're OK, you can believe them, well, more
than you can believe the rest of it.

So, if the Daily Mail says thousands will lose their jobs you can bet
their cute little mid-Atalantic ass there's a shortage of trained
professionals and a recruiting drive is in the offing.

So what? People have always moaned about the NHS and its main problem
has been that it is a political football. At least now hospitals have
to attain certain criteria or face being handed over to another,
better performing, hospital and GPs handle their own budgets. That's
not always a good thing, but the whole thing is far more service and
customer oriented than it used to be. Obviously there are always
going to be poorly run hospitals just as there are poorly run
businesses and governments. My local hospital has improved greatly -
not just according to the criteria but as witnessed by patients such
as myself - and we can now get appointments easily at our GP without
being told we had to stay ill till a week next Thursday. Although
it's not perfect, as somebody who has lived in other countries such as
myself will testify, I think it's terrific value for money and much
better than it used to be. Mind you, I have private insurance too ;-)

Excerpts from todays Guardian covering NHS planned sackings of health
professionals

"...In an online survey of 287 nurses earlier this month, the RCN said
hospital wards were already operating with an average of 13% fewer
staff than officially needed. Nine out 10 nurses said that patient
care was being compromised by short staffing..."

And

"..Disclosures made under the Freedom of Information Act at the
request of the Tories show half of NHS trusts that responded were
planning reductions in the numbers of full-time equivalent doctors and
nurses...."

From Wiki

"...Editorial articles in The Guardian are generally to the left of
the political spectrum..."

I have several members of the nursing profession in my family and they
all agree that a major problem is that nurses aren't nurses any more.
They mare mostly managers, and the ridiculous idea that they should
all have degrees is bound to have a negative effect on patient care.
According to my sources, the problem isn't so much staffing as that
nurses don't see their job as caring any more - that's the job of
orderlies. I'd agree it's an area that needs to be improved, but I
doubt it will be any time soon. The powers-that-be (both political
and administrative) in the NHS seem to have forgotten what nurses are
meant to do and - so it seems - have the nurses. Who cares whether a
nurse has a degree so long as (s)he can empty a bedpan or dress a
wound? I have seen nothing to indicate any party is going to address
this, only make it worse by distancing nurses from patients even
further - they forget why the good old fashioned caring nurses became
nurses. It was because they cared and that is being taken away from
them.

That private insurance helps out the NHS. Use of non-NHS hospitals
for operations and convalescence reduces the strain on an increasingly
over burdened service. Anyone can see where that burden emanates if
one visits hospitals in this country; not many patients under 60.

I notice in all the discussions about Obama's health bill, the NHS,
France's health service, socialised codswallop etc very little is
devoted to possibly the largest number of patients of all i.e.
those that are mentally ill. I doubt(but I don't know) whether
any of America's private health insurances schemes cover mental
health. So who looks after these patients?
