We were in Limon in january, but we didn't leave the pier area. I
wonder if these cruise passengers were on a private tour, a cruise
ship excursion or on their own?

Since there were 12 on a bus it was probably some kind of tour.

That still doesn't say if it is a cruise ship excursion or a private
one. I am leaning more towards it being a private excursion, cruise
lines don't normally do excursions with so few people.

Rereading the article there is no mention of a driver to tour guide, so
it might be that the group rented a van to explore on their own.

I questioned your reference to Limon until I reread the CNN article.
Earlier today, I had *misread* it and, thinking the incident ocurred
in San Jose, fired off an email to my TA telling her I wouldn't be
going on an excursion to San Jose any time soon. I am booked for
October on the Coral Princess and we'll be docking in...Limon!

San Jose would be a long excursion from the coast.

That does point out one of the problems with cruise line excursions.
They apparently have little interest in providing small group options.
While birding recently in Jamaica recently we ran into several others
from cruises. Yet the line offered nothing of interest.

From wire services:
February 23, 2007 -- A retired 70-year-old Marine killed a mugger with his
bare hands after a tour bus of U.S. senior citizens was held up in the
Costa Rican city of Limon, authorities said yesterday.

The retiree squeezed the 20-year-old mugger in a headlock, broke his
clavicle and choked him, police said.

THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A RETIRED MARINE!!!

According to ABC News Carnival is for the time being stopping in
Roatan, Honduras, instead of Limon. See at the end of page two of the
story below.

What a shame! With Carnival not stopping in Limon, I wonder if there
have been other attacks or problems that we don't know about.
