Default Traveling USA-Montreal, Customs?

I'll be traveling to Montreal (YUL) from the USA and back. There are no
direct flights to/from Phoenix, AZ. I have never had to connect in the
USA and clear customs when returning. Should I allow a couple hours
between flights for my return trip to the USA for clearing customs? I
had heard that YUL has US customs right there at the gate for flights
going to the USA. Is this true? That would make connecting a non-issue.

Yes, you get to go thru the US ass sniffing in Montreal.

In YUL, you go through US customs just after check-in. In-US transfer
time will be same as any other US flight but you should consider
arriving early to the airport to clear the customs. There is a seperate
lane for US citizens and green-card holders but I don't know how fast it
goes.

Have a good time in Montreal!

I take it you don't like it? Why is that? I question the purpose of
some security measures in the USA. However, I prefer what I've had in
the USA over what I've had in some other countries. The latter
basically had extremely weak security measures. British Airways leaving
he USA had the most extensive measures but it was the airline and not US
customs.

Yes. When you fly from YUL (or any of a handful of other Canadian airports)
to the US, you clear US Immigration and Customs before you board the plane.

In Dorval it happens after checkin but before the security checkpoint.

A few things to keep in mind:

US officials are anal about food. Once, I brought an apple with me and got
questioned about it for five minutes. It's easier to buy food in the waiting
area once you've cleared.

They have special lines for US Citizens that seem faster than those for
everyone else.

You've got to cart all your luggage with you past the US officials so it
might not hurt to grab a luggage cart before you check in.

Thanks for the tips. Thats odd about the food. Most airlines allow me
to take food onto the plane without problem. My wife often likes to
bring snacks for the flight. Fruits and veggies maybe an issue because
they try to slow the spread of harmful crop insects but I had never seen
that done at airports.
