Windjammer
I am so sad that Windjammer is going bust. We've sailed on their ships 5
times and had fabulous trips. It was a great way to introduce wanna be sailors to the sea. We last sailed on the Poly in 2000. It was in pretty bad shape then. My guess is they will scrap all the remaining ships except the Legacy (not a true sailing ship, but a cruising ship with sails). The Red Cross is helping the stranded crews with food, etc. The Windjammer Flotilla Site is trying to get funds for the crews and has raised $20,000 so far. Pura Vida, G. |

Blackbeards is still running, although they're more of a scuba liveaboard: http://www.blackbeard-cruises.com/ There's also some other sail-powered scuba liveaboards around the world -- IIRC, the Lammer Law in the Galapagos, the Naiia (sic) in PNG?, etc. Of course, if you have deep pockets and want to go purist, go to: http://www.coastwisepacket.com/private-charters.shtml ....and look into chartering the Shenandoah. She's a 108' square topsail schooner with no auxiliary power (yes, no engine, no electricity), which makes her absolutely unique in the American schooner fleet. Here she is at anchor earlier this summer. You can't see it in this smaller photo, but there's an anchor light hung up forward, and it is literally kerosene lantern: http://www.huntzinger.com/photo/2007...(IMG_5039).jpg -hh |

There's lots easier and cheaper ways to cruise on a sailboat other than chartering the Shenandoah. There are a number of sailboats that can be chartered with a captain and crew for a week or so - ranging from just the captain and one couple on a smaller monohull to four couples each with their own cabin on a catamaran. A lot of them in the Virgin Islands, but also in Belize and other good sailing locations Even some in Florida or other parts of the US. |

There's a fleet of sailboats that plys the waters from Dubrovnik to Venice. I forget the name but they are quite nice, not too big and not too small. -- ________ To email me, Edit "blog" from my email address. Brian M.
