Rental Car Question

Will most car rental companys if asked at the desk, will they give you
a free car upgrade? Or is this practice never followed?

Pretty much never.

On the other hand, they are quite often out of the smaller models so your get
an upgrade anyway if you reserved the small model (even though some car rental
companies try to charge extra in such situations).

It has been my experience to reserve the lowest form of car and then show
up at the exact time your reservation was made. Often your class of car may
not be available at which time they'll most likely offer an upgrade. Some
places may offer an upgrade at a reduced price..

In my experience, the only way to get a free rental car upgrade is if
the type of car you reserved is not available when you go to pick it up
at the rental agency. If you must have a particular class of car, it
is best to reserve it and pay for it, but if you can do without it, you
have nothing to lose by asking.
