Default Transport at Dalaman

Hi Folks

I'm heading for Turkey with the family in the next day or so on a last
minute trip. I think we've got the transfer from the airport to the
hotel sorted out but if it all goes wrong what's the chances of a
family of 5 getting unbooked transport to Fethiye? We arrive in
Dalaman at midnight

Thanks

K

You get a taxi to Dalaman village, then a dolmus/minibus to Fethiye.
I've done it twice after midnight. The local taxidrivers seem to be
an honest bunch. There is no bus direct from the airport (unless
your hotel has a courtesy coach, but if they did they'd have told
you about it).

Note that "dolmus" means "filled up" and it will be. If you haven't
ridden in one before, you are in for a surprise. Don't worry, you
will get there.

In Fethiye, try to eat in places where the Turks eat rather than in
places catering mainly to tourists. The tourist joints are much
more expensive and sloppy in food hygiene (despite looking glossier).

Also, there are frequently prices in $US, Euros and Pounds in that
region, but you are always better off going for places with the prices
listed in Turkish Lira. It's standard travel advice to avoid eating
anywhere that caters for 4 different languages, and contains no
locals.

Apparently they are planning on changing the denomination of the Lira
by dropping a zero or six, but I have no details as to when. Anyone
know?

Thanks! Is a dolmus practical with a full set luggage? I've read
about them but it will be our first time, so I'm not entirely sure what
to expect.

If the taxi drivers are honest what about getting a taxi the whole way?
Very expensive? The booked transfer was about =A340.

Having picked up my currency they seem to have already done this. The
notes were in demoninations of between 1 and 50 Lira - I was slightly
disappointed

They're already doing it. There are two sets of currency in
circulation, one in millions of old lira and the other in ones
of new lira. The notes are the same size for the same value,
but the coins are an utterly confusing mess, with the old and
new ones of the same value in overlapping sets of sizes. The
transition should be over in a year.

They are very good at packing stuff in (or on roof racks). Just
don't expect to move much once it's full. I like to use an
inflatable neck cushion and a scarf as padding so I can sleep.

If the taxi drivers are honest what about getting a taxi the whole
way? Very expensive? The booked transfer was about ?40.

At normal Turkish bus fare prices, that would get you to Iran and
back. I wouldn't pay it myself, but if you were really tired from
the flight you might think it worthwhile. There will probably be
a taxi fare schedule including Fethiye posted somewhere obvious at
the airport.

You will need another taxi to get to your hotel from Fethiye bus
station - the tourist hotels are some way out. For some, a boat
is the easiest way to get there but there may not be one at 2am.
Ask the hotel what they suggest.

Whatever vehicle you're in, Dalaman-Fethiye is a twisty lurchy road.

Do report back on the bus station loos at Fethiye. When I was
there they were run by a wildly eccentric old couple who not only
kept them spotlessly clean, they festooned them with flowers and
had framed testimonials from satisfied customers on display.
