Default Breakfast in France

I am working on a trip to France. Compared to other countires B&B and small
hotels seem to charge 12 -15 euros for a continental breakfast which seems
like a lot for breakfast. Can anyone tell me if there are generally small
cafes in towns annd cities that are open for breakfast that would be
cheaper than 13 euros.
I have heaerd that for lunch one can generally find little places where
you can buy bread and cheese and meat at reasonable prices and build our
own picnic lunch

In Paris cafes you can get coffee (one cup only) for about 3 euros, a roll
and jam for another 2 euros. Lots of places are open for breakfast; some
even advertise a British or American-style breakfast.

My recent IBIS bill at Caen was 7 euros for breakfast. This is a

serve
yourself buffet, so coffee, fruit juices, baskets of bread and

croissants,
cereals, ham and cheese, are available essentially allowing one to

eat as
much as they wish. I think this formula is standard for all the

chains
now, Campanile has the same buffet arrangement.

I seem to remember hard-boiled eggs in addition to the above.
