Default Caverns question

Allow me to add that given you are going to Carlsbad Caverns, take the added
tours to the rooms closed to the general public. These costs extra, but are
well worth the extra cost.

Hello everybody.
I'm Paolo from Italy.
I'm planning a trip in AZ and NM in June.
I have a question: I have to decide between Carlsbad Caverns or
Kartchner.
I've searched for a comparision, but I didn't find it.
What is your suggestion?
Thank you in advance
Paolo

I would like to tank you for your answers.
I've decide for Carlsbad. I hope to be there at dusk for the "bat
experience"
Thank you again.
Paolo

Carlsbad is an interesting experience, but when I was there many years ago, it
was too heavily traveled for me to really enjoy. One of the caves I've most
enjoyed is about 5 hours' drive east of Carlsbad, near Sonora, TX off I-10;
it's a smallish show cave with some of the most interesting speleothems
I've ever seen: http://www.cavernsofsonora.com/index.php?id=303 and
the closest I've come to a "wild cave" experience in a show cave.
Really nice cave.

It's also not far from Monahans Sand Dunes, another area I really enjoyed.
Climb a dune at sunset, settle back, and watch the stars come out....

Kay

Lovely but too far for me. I've only three weeks..... maybe next time.

Well worth it. (We especially liked Lower Cave
and Slaughter Cave. Spider sounded too rough and scary
for us) but book as far in advance as you can. They only
have a few trips and the groups are very small.

Also, regular rental cars cannot be taken into
Mexico. If you go to Juarez, I'd suggest you park in El
Paso and take the Border Jumper Trolley:

Bring a jacket. It's about 50F (10C) deep in the caves. I spent a long,
chilly afternoon one August. I think the cave temperature is constant,
year round, in the deeper caverns.
