I think it's Mohawk Indian for "ripoof!"

You're spelling it incorrectly -- it's Niagara. A very strange word, now
that I look at it...I wonder what its origin is?

It comes from the ancient Sumerian for "desert".

The Falls are also on the march south towards Lake Erie.

That would figure, if erosion can be trusted at all.

When you do a search, check your spelling, it's Niagara Falls.

Thanks Dave
I appreciate your input VERY much.
I believe we WILL stay on the Canadian side for all the reasons you
mentioned.

I suppose if I cant get ahold of brochures ahead of time, no doubt they
will be all over the place once we get there and we can browse over them
and decide which places look fun to us.

I will keep checking in , in case anyone else has an opinion they wish
to share too

Thanks again Dave.

This totally misrepresents the American side of the falls. There is a
lovely large park on the American side. Years ago, the American side
was quite tacky and the Canadian side pristine, but now I find the
Canadian side overly commercialized and the American side has been
cleaned up and made very nice, and much less commercial.

What misrepresentation is there? When you drive along the parkway from Fort Erie to
Niagara Falls there is park land all the way along the river. Along some stretches
of the parkway there are some nice homes, a private school, a few hotels and a
restaurant. When you look across the river you see factories and oil tanks. Along
that stretch of the parkway the view across the river is much nicer from the
American side, once you look past the factories.

There has indeed been a lot of development on the Canadian side over the last 10
years since the casino went in. The hotels are taller and spoil the view (looking
away from the falls), but the new development is all modern hotels, casino,
theatres etc., not tacky tourist traps. There are still clustered around Clifton
Hill and Victoria St. and they seem to be very popular with a lot of the tourists.

There is a nice park on Goat Island on the American side, but due to the curve of
the Horseshoe falls and the American falls tumbling over the edge on the American
side, it is best seen from across the river.

The downtown business sections of both cities should be avoided.

I never approached Niagara Falls from that direction. However, I don't
judge the place by the highway leading in to it, and don't think most
tourists do, either. The approach to Venice is all oil refineries,
which the approach to Bloomington, Indiana is all parkland.

Of course, I wouldn't compare Venice to Bloomington, but to dismiss
Niagara Falls NY because the road from Buffalo is ugly is a bit
misleading. The area near the Falls is what most people experience,
and I would say that the experience is more pleasant on the American
side, while I agree that the view is better from the Canadian side.
(That's partially because the Canadian side has put up some god awful
high rise hotels with huge neon signs.)

if you prefer crackheads and Ho's, stay on the us side.

If you can put up with high rise hotels and neon. go to canada.

the us has a nice park but beyond that, the falls area is a joke. You
may as well be standing in gary indiana. yes, its that bad......

the canadian side is the only way to see the falls.

I'd avoid the Maid of the Mist and instead go on the jet boat, which
leaves from Lewiston NY, about 20 minutes north of the city center of
Niagara Falls NY. http://www.whirlpooljet.com/index2.cfm

When I did it 4 years ago, it was a little pricey (maybe $40 per
person), but totally worth it IMO. Bring a dry change of clothes and
hang out afterwards in the bar/restaurant adjoing the boat dock. It was
a beautiful way to spend a sunny afternoon.

Ah, interesting, I hadn't heard of that trip. I see that it also operates
on the Canadian side (with departures from Niagara-on-the-Lake).

Sounds like fun, yes. Note that this trip covers a completely different
bit of the river than the Maid of the Mist; from the Maid you see the
falls, whereas the jet boat is for the rapids further downstream.

At this point I'll put in my usual plug for the White Water Walk, where
you walk alongside a section of rapids even more powerful than the ones
that the jet boat traverses. (From the jet boat you would see the river
as it emerges from these rapids.) This is on the Canadian side only.
