Niamey - Ouaga - Bamako
To anyone who has been in the Mali, Burkina, Niger part of West Africa
lately, can you help with these questions: 1. Is there any moderately comfortable ground transportation between Bamako and Ouaga, or between Ouaga and Niamey? By 'moderately comfortable' I mean: not bush taxis, definitely not riding on top of trucks, and perhaps (dare I even think it?) even with a bit of air conditioning? I'm thinking perhaps a small bus with moderately comfortable seats? 2. Does anyone have any information on car rentals in Ouagadougou or Niamey? Types of cars, prices, possible problems or things to watch out for? A bit of background: I lived in Burkina in the late 1970s, but have not been back since. I don't mind roughing it for travel, but I will be with an inexperienced traveller who would probably enjoy the trip more with some modest comfort. I would like to avoid air travel between the above destinations, in part so that we can see the country side, but also to avoid the hassle of airports. But I don't know if there is any (even moderately) comfortable public ground transportation between Bamako, Ouaga, and Niamey these days. Any information would be helpful. Thanks very much. Alan |

Niamey - Ouaga - Bamako
Good health and high spirits!
I haven't been to Niamey, but I have a friend who just went through there this year.. there is a bus.. don't know anything about it. As for the trip from Oauga to Bamako, there are comfortable buses. The roads have been redone in 2001 for the African games they are very good roads with alot of speed bumps. I never rented a car there, but I did inquire about using one to go to Timbuktu.. the answer all over seemed to be 1) pretty pricey.. 2) you have to rent the driver as well. there are still bush taxis and smaller crappy buses but I travelled all around Mali and BF on the comfortable buses mainly here's some info... In Mali: Bittar trans: tel 20 15 05.. Bamako to Segou.... 2,500fcfa from Bamako to Mopti 7,000cfa In Burkina Fasu... Sogebaf trans: tel 30.36.27 Ouagadougou to Bamako.. 1,500 f travel around BF Rakieta (Banfora) tel 88.03.81 from Bobo to Banfora... 1000f As I remember Rakieta was the roughest ride.. chickens, pigs in the bus, rams under the bus and goats on the roof. furniture, no windows, hot, crammed with people when we arrived to our destination we were covered in red dust.... yup that was an awesome ride.. the other transits were comfortable with curtains, air, loud music, no over crowding and if there was, the people usually grumbled about it. Lots of checkpoints crossing the borders from BF to Mali and if you are riding with Nigerians.... be in for a lonnnnngggg ride... it takes along time for them to be pulled off the bus, their luggage searched, bribes paid etc.. here are the names of some of the rental places in Bamako.. Falaye keita 223.21.43.95 fx:223.21.43.85 Djenne location 223.24.92 fx:223.22.26.26 Mali Art trade/tours 223.29.01.29 Locatours 223.21.01.33 fx:223.21.65.49 hope this helps a little Tashshy I don't go anywhere. Going somewhere is for squares. I just go! LIFE IS AN ATTITUDE! http://www.globosapiens.net/ta-shy "Alan" wrote in message oups.com...
