Default Chautauqua Institute

My wife and I will be traveling to the Chautauqua Institute with a
group for the day, and an evening concert. I looked at their website,
but was confused about what type of eating arrangements there are. Are
there snack bars or do you need to eat in a restaurant? Can you bring
your own picnic lunch,or do you need to buy theirs? Also can you bring
a backpack or is it like going to a baseball game where eveyone is
searched?

Thanks

Tom

Heavens, no! Perhaps you've already taken a moment to look it up
yourself, but in case not, It's a 100-year-plus-old center for
the education of body and mind. Around the turn of the century
(the previous one), chautauquas were a *huge* pheonomenon
across the country, with thousands and thousands of people
attending lectures, concerts, etc. Read up on it sometime;
it's interesting. Besides the original center in NY, there's
also still a chautauqua organization in Boulder, Colorado.

what type of eating arrangements there are...

A friend of mine has been there several times, and she told me it has
several restaurants, an ice cream shop that also sells some snacks (I
don't know the specifics), and a small deli market. Some people bring
their own picnic lunches. (Alcohol is not permitted unless it is
consumed in a restaurant or in your hotel room.)

is everyone searched?

Last time she was there (last year) there were no searches.

You also might want to check the "meals" info on the FAQ page on the
official site, although it's a little vague:

So then it is a rehab, just not a drug rehab. ;-)

Well, if you're a secular humanist as I am you don't think of it as
rehab. More like recidivism.

I know that they offer religious studies, but does it really
permeate their other offerings? Their performance series certainly
has plenty of mainstream musicians and comedians.

The center in NY happens to be located on Chautauqua Lake, which is in the
middle of Chautauqua County, the western-most county in New York. It's a
beautiful spot. I've toured the grounds but have never attended an event
there.
