Regards David Bennetts No arguments; but I'd add almost any of the coastal towns as good stops - Lorne, Port Campbell, Port Fairy (lovely little town), Portland. Even Nelson (stay in a cabin in the riverside Caravan Park) with a side trip to the Glenelg National Park is worth a night. I'd definitely agree with going the coastal route compared to the inland. As the other poster stated, the great Ocean road from Apollo Bay towards
Warrnambool and then onto Mt Gambier would be the best way to go. Lots to see at all the places on the way. Stop overnight at Apollo Bay or Lorne, Warrnambool, Portland & Mt Gambier Lots to see in all those places. Once getting to Mt Gambier, see the Lakesand other things . Then I would suggest then going the inland route on Riddoch highway, through Coonawarra, Penola, Naracoorte, Padthaway & Keith, stopping to see the Limestone caves just before Naracoorte and just off the Penola road, then onto Padthaway & Keith then via the main Dukes highway towards Tailem Bend , Murray Bridge to Adelaide. You may need to stop overnight somewhere between Mt Gambier and Adelaide, depending upon what you stop to see. If you are into wines, then Coonawarra has lots and Padthaway has Hardy's Stonehaven winery (about 6kms Naracoorte side of Padthaway) and has a tasting centre on main road (Padthaway wines are better IMHO than Coonawarra wines, even though Coonawarra has been around longer and more well known). Tailem Bend Bakery has a great range of goodies and its pasties are larger than anywhere else I have found and I have travelled all around Australia. Plenty of places to stay, interesting old buildings, a great little port and restaurants. Kerry http://www.morrisminor.com/AroundAus...2-apostles.jpg |

Some web sites to maybe have a look at so you can see what there's to see (and what appeals to you) a - www.greatoceanroad.org Great Ocean Road web site, covers the coastal route in Victoria with links to continuing on into South Australia. - http://www.travelvictoria.com.au/reg...reatoceanroad/ Covers route from Melbourne to state border including some photo galleries. |
