Hi Larry

There are many trains e.g. Hirtshals 12.58 Kobenhavn 18.22 change at
Hjorring. See www.rejseplanen.dk

By the way, does anyone know if we can make 12.58 train from ferry
arrival at 12.30 (28 mins).

But I looked at the train schedules from Hirtsals Havn to Koebenhavn on
the German Rail site and the trip is incredible: two trains a day, but
it takes many changes and it takes from 26 to nearly 35 hours to get
there! Hopefully there is better bus service.

PS: The reason it takes so long is that you take the ferry back to
Kristiansands, then trains via Oslo and Malmo. So apparently there is
no train service from Hirtsals in Denmark to Copenhagen. Anyone else
know better?

here the link to color-line, where you can book you journey online:
http://www.colorline.com/servlets/page?section=4001

If the ferry is in time and you don't have to carry a lot of baggage, wheel
chair or
kinderwagen it is possible. We did it last year and it took about 10 to 15
minutes
(but it differs when the ferry is crowded with passengers). I don't know if
the trains
are waiting.
You don't have to go to Hirtshals (main-)station, Color-Line has its own
stop in the port.

Many thanks Ullrich

Does the private line recognize Eurail Pass? This avoids wasting time
buying tickets.

50% off only. Also the Eurail gives 30% off your ferry crossing as well.

IIRC, you can buy your ticket from the staff on the train.
