Any currency will be fine, just don't carry too much money with you. Very easy to get cash at ATMs, which are available everywhere in Vietnam. -- Alfred Molon http://www.molon.de - Photos of Asia, Africa and Europe |

I used USD but mostly ATM - CitiBank branches in HCM City and Hanoi provided great service - (3 years ago). If you are from UK then I would think Pounds should do fine. I would suggest that taking Vietnam currency in would NOT be very practical. When I was there 1 USD = 14,000 dongs; over a million dongs for every 100 USD; you may need extra backpack just to carry all the dongs ! -- LeisureMan |

You can take VND in with you, if you have it. But most currency exchange places outside of Vietnam don't have Dong (I've never found one in Singapore, Malaysia, S. Korea or Taiwan, but there may be some places I haven't found), so unless you already have some currency, you'll have to change money once you're in the country. I've found that USD are readily accepted, to the point that I've received hotel bills in dollars. Also, as others have pointed out, most ATMs in Vietnam are a part of Star, Plus, Interlink or other international networks, and you can easily get VND from them. |

Don't forget that every time you buy a US dollar O/seas it's an interest free loan to little Georgie Bush. Just another good reason to take your own currency. As mentioned, it's a snack to exchange it into Dong. They have 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 & 500,000 notes so there's no need for any back pack for notes at all. |

My wife and I visited the country a little over two months ago, and we brought in US dollars, Hong Kong dollars, and Yuan. No problems. We were able to convert US dollars to dong for between 15,500 to 16,000 dong to the dollar. I converted very few dollars to dong. We were careful to declare this currency when we entered the country along with our gold jewelry. Two years ago, one guy at immigation or customs (can't remember which) actually wanted to see all the currency. We always save receipts whenever we can get them. rg |
