Default "Budget' trip from CNX to Luang Prabang

aside from 'forking' over a high airlines fee to get there, is there a safe
way to get to LP from northern Thailand?? I read about the crossing from
Chiang Khong to Ban Houei Xai and also about the expense and danger of the
"fast boats" to go to LP....any options????

If you are in CNX (Chiang Mai,) you can get a comfortable mini-van (I
just rode in it last week,) at Namkhong Travel agency on Chaiyaphum Road
in Chiang Mai, that will take you up to the river in Chiang Khong, and
you can stay at their guest house until the boat departs.

You can take either a 'fast boat' for 6 hours, or a slow boat for two
days, getting your tickets from Namkhong Guest House there or at their
Travel agency. If you are looking for a nice relaxing ride with plenty
of photo ops along the way, take the slow boat. Both are as safe as
anything is in this part of the world.
