Travelling to India with a laptop?
Hi I am generally unfamiliar with laptops. But I was thinking of travelling
with an old 486DX laptop to India. I need to use word, outlook, and FTP to transfer files from my laptop to internet. My questions: 1. Would the power supply for US laptops work in India? Do I need to buy additional equipment? 2. Would my 56k modem and rj11 jack work in Indian telephone lines? 3. Finally what sort of protective casing should I take to put the laptop in, as I'll be travelling through trains and perhaps buses? Thanks Rohit |

Travelling to India with a laptop?
1) You can sort out the power issues when you get here. Converters are
available very cheap from any electronics shop. 2) Yes 3) Any decent laptop carrying case will do, but for trains I suggest getting yourself some sort of a locking mechanism on it. 1. Would the power supply for US laptops work in India? Do I need to buy additional equipment? Check where the power goes in, there'll be a rating tag. With any luck it will say 100-240V (or similar) which means it will work on Indian 230V power. Then you'll just need a plug adapter which you can find in any little electrical supply store there. 2. Would my 56k modem and rj11 jack work in Indian telephone lines? Yes but you may need a plug adapter. Pennies once you get there. miguel -- See the world from your web browser: http://travel.u.nu/ |

No adapter is required for the rj11 jack, so assuming your modem is built into the laptop, connecting should be just the usual - I used my father's account on my laptop when I was in India earlier this year. My questions: 1. Would the power supply for US laptops work in India? Do I need to buy additional equipment? You need to take a look at your power supply (probably that little box attached to your power cable). This should state the power rating. If it is rated at 110V-240V then you should be OK, otherwise you will need another power supply. 2. Would my 56k modem and rj11 jack work in Indian telephone lines? Yes it will but don't expect that you will get anywhere nearthe 56K you currently enjoy. 3. Finally what sort of protective casing should I take to put the laptop in, as I'll be travelling through trains and perhaps buses? If you are going to have the laptop stored with other luggage (and I suggest that you don't) then you should probably get some hard cased bag to house your laptop, otherwise any case is fine as 'carry-on'. My recollection is that I was able to use it in the more expensive, western-style hotels. 3. Finally what sort of protective casing should I take to put the laptop in, as I'll be travelling through trains and perhaps buses? Same kind you'd use for any business trip. Thanks Rohit |

Check the power adapter itself, as this is where the AC voltage comes in. The laptop itself isn't going care what voltages are coming into the power adapter, it only cares about the voltage from the adapter. I |

Thanks Rohit You probably will need a GRIC or IPass account to save some telephone costs. On that way, you can dial in locally. |

In hotels and modern buildings this is probably the case, but in older homes and offices the phone jacks are different (great big knobbly things). miguel -- See the world from your web browser: http://travel.u.nu/ |

1. Would the power supply for US laptops work in India? Do I need to buy additional equipment? Other people have said yes, but you should read the label on your power brick. Much more reliable than posting here. If it takes 220v, you need just a plug converter, a $1 passive device to give you the round pins they use in india. Warning: the power sockets come in two pin sizes and three spacings, so take a variety (they are all round pins, however). 2. Would my 56k modem and rj11 jack work in Indian telephone lines? Re modem, others have said yes but the answer is maybe. It depends on local phone line quality, but also some modems are more finicky than others. My Dell laptop modem would disconnect within a few minutes; I added an external 'world modem", loading CMOS settings specifically for India, and this worked much better, Re the jack, others have said yes but the answer is probably not. Most home phones are hardwired, and as for offices, it depends on the office. Take one of those kits that contain screwdrivers and phone cords ending in alligator clips. |
