Default UK Phones - Compatible with Oz SIM cards?

I will be spending 10 weeks on Australia & New Zealand, and wonder what's
the score when it comes to mobile phones?

If I was to bring my UK phone, does anyone know if this will work with a
"pay as you go" SIM card bought in Australia?

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Many thanks,

Simon
England.

Yes!! Provided it is a gsm phone (Not Network 3) and unlocked - that means
not sim locked (nothing to do with key locks)! It will work with Telstra
(gsm), Optus and Vodafone (Virgin, CircleB and all the others use one of
these networks).

Telstra also runs a CDMA network, which gives better bush coverage, and
there are 3G networks also (but they give strictly big city coverage).

Buy sim cards and recharge cards as needed, just about everywhere
(supermarkets, Post Offices, Department Stores, Mall booths, newsagents etc
etc).

Have fun!

Just remember that nothing (except satellite) works once you
get away from major cities and the major connecting
highways.

Bear in mind the exchange rate will be in your favour so it may be worth
looking at phones here with a view to taking one back to the UK with you.

Funny you cay that Alan, I travel round SE Qld heaps and rarely got any drop
outs from Optus, mind you company has just gone (with disastrous results) to
Telstra and drop outs are an hourly occurance almost, Im trialling a Telstra
CDMA and its way better in low signal quality but still not as good as
Optus.

I find Vodafone best in most parts of NSW.

A word of advice to the original OP (and probably already known to
most, but worth restating) - if on a GSM mobile and you need to
contact emergency services (anywhere in the world, for that matter)
ALWAYS use 112 rather than the local emergency number (000 in
Australia) - it will use any available carrier, even if your own
carrier is out of coverage.

Three problems with this theory:

1. The $AUD has just come off a 10 year maximum against the pound.

2. It doesn't matter what the exchange rate is. The phones are made in
Taiwan, China etc and priced in (probably) US$ to the importer. Doesn't make
any difference if you buy them in pounds corresponding to some US$, or
convert pounds to $AUD corresponding to the same US$. It will be the same
cost in pounds. The statement "the exchange rate will be in your favour" is
completely meaningless when talking about tradeable currencies (ie all
Western currencies including the pound and the $AUD). What does "in your
favour" even supposed to mean? How do you determine if its "in your favour",
and how does that make tradable manufactured goods cheaper to buy? If you
don't want to look a bit of an idiot, you might stop using the phrase
"exchange rate in your favour" in future.

3. Of all the things to buy overseas, a mobile phone looks one of the
stupidest. You get the best prices if you buy a handset "locked" to a local
operator (telco), but such a handset is useless outside of Australia. One of
the very few items that you can buy in Australia that you can be guaranteed
will not work anywhere else in the world (a cheap and hence locked mobile
phone).

Other than that, please keep up your useful, well thought through and
informed posts.

In SE Qld, there are lots of people - and lots of masts. See
how you go a little further west, once you're out of sight
of the towns. Just as an example, a little further south, I
rarely had reception once I left town in Inverell, Bingara,
Moree, Manilla, Gunnedah, Coonabarabran etc. In Qld, it's
the same for the inland towns in the Surat etc.

Coverage is at:
Optus

Telstra

Vodafone
