"Gregory Morrow" vented
spleen or mostly mumbled...

I'll use the stairs instead of the escalator at most any Metro station
in DC, but NOT at Dupont Circle!

For several years, I passed thru the Dupont Circle "Gateway to Hades"
crater several times a year. For USAians, exposed to narrow stairs and
confined subsway spaces, this giant volcanic crater with an escalator is
something.

Yep, and there is an even longer escalator up a bit north, I believe (Shady
Grove?). That one is the second longest subway escalator in the world (the
first is in Moscow)....

I'm usually not afraid of heights, but that Dupont escalator gives me the
willies going either way....

Wait until you're on it when someone at the bottom end gets stuck and
people start to hit her from behind. I saw that on a (level) moving
sidewalk once, and it wasn't pretty. It's a wonder the lady lived.
Ever since I maintain some space on escalators, and I watch for those
stop buttons.

An escalator that big probably has a 50,000-hp motor, too.
