Victoria Avoiding Recession? Figures, forecasts that will surprise The
Victorian Treasury which has predicted that the state's economy will
dodge the worst of the recession, with output continuing to grow, and
the unemployment rate peaking at just under 8 per cent in two years'

Immigration to cut 10% of jobs ONE in 10 jobs is expected to be
slashed from the Immigration Department in the federal budget on May
12. The skilled migrant intake, which was slashed by 14 per cent in

Renters seek financial safety in numbers THE threat of pay cuts and
unemployment are driving a growing number of young Australians out of
rental properties and back to living with their parents or into shared
accommodation. The trend is adding to the downward pressure on rents
sparked by the rising number of young people leaving rental properties
to take advantage of the Rudd Government's boost to the first-home
buyers scheme and lower interest rates.

Uproar over face scan for foreign students MELBOURNE colleges will
consider the introduction of facial recognition technology at
classroom doors in a bid to curb abuse of international student
visas. Many international students are required to attend at least 80
per cent of classes under education visas granted by the Federal
Government. But TAFE teacher Gary Alexander said facial recognition
technology was the only way to tackle rorting by foreign students
seeking permanent residency in Australia.

Migrant figures jump the slump IMMIGRATION has soared to record
levels, even with the country in recession. Figures show that in the
year to March, permanent and long-term arrivals outnumbered departures
by 337,000. The Bureau of Statistics says that in the March quarter
alone, people entering the country who said they would stay here for
at least a year outnumbered residents leaving for at least a year by
128,000 — about 10,000 a week.

Recession over in months AUSTRALIA will be out of recession within
months, according to new forecasts from the Reserve Bank. But it
warns the path back to economic health will be slow and uncertain.
Released ahead of next Tuesday's federal budget, the forecasts suggest
the worst of the recession is upon us right now, though unemployment
is tipped to climb for some time.
