body scanners in European airports

They've got them now in Duesseldorf International. Body scanners don't bother me, but taking off my shoes did. Being obviously old and leaning on a cane has been sparing me lately, however. Are they the only option? or is there a regular metal detector beside it? -- Dan Stephenson http://stepheda.com Travel pages for Europe and the U.S.A. (and New Zealand too) |

Would be useful to know if the same option exists in europe. Exactly what are you scared of? If you are worried about radiation then perhaps you shouldn't fly at all. Are you saying unavoidable radition at altitude exceeds the exposure of imposed and man-made radiation from the scanner? BTW, radiation isn't the only concern. Some travelers are shy about having their full nude body examined (as the scanner is good enough to produce an image that closely resembles the nude body). Travelers heading for a casino might not want their money-belt to trigger cross-examination harassment. It's not difficult to find issues with the scanner. The scanners I have seen do not show a body, they show a schematic outline with the areas hilighted that the security guy checks manually. |

Some travellers are more concerned that a fellow traveller has
explosives concealed on their body. Some travellers would like to do away with the security theatre. Travelers heading for a casino might not want their money-belt to trigger cross-examination harassment. Then declare that you have money on your body. Give up your privacy in a misguided attempt to achieve privacy? Catch 22. In the US it tramples the 5th amendment. One of the major problems with the scanner is that it's used to discover non-safety related contraband that creates an intrusive and irreversable industry. In the US searches are supposed to be executed in a manner that limits the search to what they believe they will find, not go on a fishing expedition for anything illegal. E.g. it's not acceptible for a cop to search through someones paper documents if they are looking for a brick of cocaine. I'm probably getting off in the woods here, as Europe doesn't have the same resistence to "general warrants" that the US has. |

Why did Nomen Nescio repost an old message?
The mixmaster network is quite unreliable, so it often takes several posts before it sticks. In this case a dupe was sent before the original posted. He's already had recommendations for UK casinos from John T and me. Offering a catch 22 does not count as a solution. Thanks for trying though. And more generally, doing away with privacy is generally a poor solution when lack of privacy is the problem in the first place. |
