Default Couple more questions... HAL's new tipping policy.

We like the "thank-yous" we get for the personal recognition we give
them in the form of a tip. We have always tipped along the ship's
guidelines, and feel that now these automatic charges will be shared by
unknown staff who have not necessarily personally served us, don't know
who we are, and we have no way to tell how well they performed their duties.

Our May Zuidy was our first cruise under this new tipping system, and we
simply could not leave without giving a few extra dollars to those who
made our cruise so enjoyable.

I'm not sure I understand what you're talking about.

If they're putting tips on your account, then why are you thinking you must
still hand out cash?

Default Couple more questions... HAL's new tipping policy - Here's How It Worked For Us

Just got off the Maasdam 17 July (will post a review if I can find the
time). We found it incredibly convenient to not worry about cash and
envelopes. And, for those who treated us exceptionally well, we handed them
a little cash the last day. In fact, we would have tipped those who treated
us well a bit more than the recommended anyway. So the combination of
"automatic" tipping and our individual handouts probably amounted to what we
would have tipped under the old system anyway. It was nice to not worry
about envelopes and cash, and also nice to shake some hands while tipping a
small extra amount.

The new system worked for us - we found it convenient, and we were able to
recognize those we wanted.

..Perhaps I missed something, but.... The way I understand it.... If
one prefers to tip individually, the crew member must put the money in a
"common" pot if "HE" knows that the cruiser has had the 10 bucks per day
removed from his account. ...However... The cruiser supposedly cannot
have the added "tip??" charge removed from his account (if he so
desires), until the last day of the cruise.
..So how would this work, as even now, everyone (who does tip), does so
before receiving his final "disputable" bill ?
..So you end up tipping the dining room staff etc., as per usual.
...Then, they turn their tips in (Or hold them upfront) until they know
for sure you haven't had the automatic charges removed on the morning of
your departure ?? ...I think not; nobody's that honest.

..And what about room service? ...We always tip 2 or 3 bucks for the
morning coffee delivery, or for a sandwich delivered at night. ...Does
the crew man have to turn this money into a common pot too? ...Jon

Default Couple more questions... HAL's new tipping policy.

Tom.. It's like I mentioned before with hotel room service. Just about
every "classy" place now automatically adds the 15% gratuity right on to
your room service bill. (It states that on the menu) ....This charge,
then, is automatically added to your room bill. ....However, when the
guy delivers your food, he still stands there expecting a "personal" tip
for services rendered. I see the same thing happening on the HAL
cruise ships. IE: Let's see, do I "double tip", or do I try to avoid
eye contact with the room steward on the last day after not giving him
anything extra.
There are indeed tightwads, but nobody likes to be shafted out of their
money by the use of guilt tactics. ...And that's what the cruise line
will be banking on. Sure you'll be charged the 10 bucks per day, but
...."Ahemm"....Its up to you if you want to tip an additional amount.
...Jon

Default Couple more questions... HAL's new tipping policy - Here's How...

Rest assured, Al, you're shelling out considerably more than you
think.... ...I see those TV ads: help the needy kids in 3rd. world
countries, aren't the only ones who can utilize guilt tactics to the
fullest. You're living proof of that. Just what HAL wants. You
supplement the crew's wages, that they are required to pay, but they've
twisted the method around so you actually feel good about it. ...Jon

Just what HAL wants.

HAL didn't really have anything to do with it.
