Take a look at www.ryanair.com (for example) and you'll find lots and lots
of very cheap flights from London to other European destinations. They're
not the most customer-service-oriented airline in the world, their flights
often leave or arrive at inconvenient times, and their airports are often
a distance from the cities they creatively suggest that they serve - but
if you have a week, none of this should matter too much.

You can also get surprisingly cheap flights on more mainstream carriers,
but if you don't have any particular destination in mind, you might as
well just see what's lowest-priced on a budget carrier like Ryanair and go
with that.

Sometimes they do special-offer flights for a euro plus taxes (my brother
claims to have bought one for a *cent*), in which case it's not really the
end of the world, or the credit card, if you book and decide closer to the
time not to travel...

I would also add that if you are booking less than a month in advance, you
may find it cheaper to book with a 'proper' airline. BMI usually has cheap
fares to a number of destinations in Europe www.flybmi.com also check Air
France www.airfrance.com I've picked up a few last minute flights with them
at very reasonable prices.

Thanks everyone, I will definitely check out Ryanair first!

Following up to Michelle

Or maybe somewhere in Spain?

I would recommend Sevilla at that time of year if you can get a
flight and room.

Or Girona (sorry, an in joke)

Yes, the summer round that area is very hot, winter is often
sunny and cool.

Default Any advice on a week trip from London after X-mas? BEWALondon Asylum Seeker Rapist Cab Drivers.

My boyfriend and I will be visiting his family in England for
Christmas and want to go somewhere else for a week after Boxing
Day....maybe spend New years somewhere fun. We thought about doing a
snowboarding trip, but everything seems booked or really overpriced.
We could fly somewhere (but we have to go back to the U.S. via
London....as we already booked our flight), or there is the option of
borrowing his Dad's car and driving somewhere. For some reason we are
having a really hard time deciding what to do.....any ideas or
opinions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Be very careful in the UK. Go to Austria and snowboard. They have
fewer asylum seeker rapists. Violent street crime is out of control
in England.

Illegal minicab drivers are to have their fingerprints and DNA taken
in a clampdown on sex assaults on passengers.

Hundreds of drivers will undergo DNA swabs from next Monday - a move
which police believe could catch dozens of rapists.

Police have been given permission for the first time to take the
crucial samples from people they arrest for driving taxis without
licences.

The new powers will allow detectives to match samples to evidence
taken from the victims of more than 200 sexual assaults and rapes
committed against minicab passengers in London in the last two years
alone.

The move comes after intense lobbying by police and Mayor Ken
Livingstone - and after a series of cases where women were subjected
to attacks by illegal minicab drivers

The advice given to Londoners and visitors, on this group and elsewhere, has
consistently been to avoid unlicensed taxi firms and never hail a minicab on
the street. Licensed taxi and minicabs can be checked at one of the
Transport For London websites (offline now, but I'm sure I've posted it
before).

This is basic common sense and has nothing to do with "violent street crime
out of control", but I wouldn't expect any useful advice to materialise from
a cross-posting to alt.politics or uk.politics

All measures to be applauded.
Ken's certainly doing a good job as mayor.

The opinions of most people in this NG are worthless - a displacement
mechanism for impotent anger - something that defuses any real action.
The only people that matter with respect to Red Ken are the people of London
and I suspect he'll romp home in the next mayoral elections.
