Growth of Cruise Industry

When I was designing public web sites, the executives I presented my work to didn't want to hear anything about load times, didn't want to hear anything about bandwidth requirements, didn't want to hear anything about how the site would work for many low-end customers. One made the issue clear to me: If they can't afford or aren't inclined to spend money for the better web connections available, then do you really want them as customers? Or, are they the typically kind of person to rely on the web to find information? Not being a marketing-guy, I didn't have factual answers to those questions, but having some business background, I recognize that the executive was probably right. The executives logic is faulty where I am concerned. Well, their logic isn't intended to be based on your personal behavior, but rather intended to make the best decision for the owners of the business, based on the behavior of the market as-a-whole. I have been a DP professional for over 25 years. Me too. -- bicker® http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/D...ry_040602.html |

It is EXACTLY like that: A business or legal reason prompts DVD authors to not allow you to speed past warnings and licenses. Similarly, I'd expect that business reasons (probably a matter of keeping costs in line with available resources) prevent making a web site fit like hand-in-glove to every possible user. All they have to do is put a link on their web page, "Click here to skip intro." How much could that cost? I believe that is covered by the business or legal reasons. I think that the sale they lost from my not going on the curise is freater than the cost to allow me to bypass the flash. Assuming that you really wouldn't go on the cruise as a result specifically of the use of Flash on their web site (and who's web site are we even talking about now???????), it is very likely that you're in an insignificant minority. -- bicker® http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/D...ry_040602.html |
