Using your argument;-
Seeing that people have sadly died on cruise ships in relation to them or
others consuming alcohol.
Thats enough to ban alcohol, isnt it?

Alcohol damage is internal, fire is external.
I don't mind people killing themselves.

Interestingly, most cigarette fires where people fall asleep and set
the place on fire are related to alcohol. Alcohol can enable you to do
really stupid things that also impact others. Fights on board. Falling
overboard and screwing the intinerary up for the rest of us while they
go back to look for the idiot, etc.

Yet, if they didnt smoke, none of those fires would get started.

I have not fallen overboard or started fights onboard, but then I
drink in moderation.

Yeah they'd just have to leave stuff on the stove, fire up the grill,
etc. After almost 10 years investigating fires, I can tell you that
alcohol leads to many fires even w/o the aid of cigs.

What about alcohol, how many passengers have suffered injury or deaths
caused by themselves or others consuming alcohol.
I don't smoke but I don't rant and rave about smokers or drinkers.
The effects of smoke on non smokers (in most cases) appears to be over the

Smoking can cause a fire that could destroy many cabins and kill lots
of people on a very expensive ship. One person drinking and falling
overboard could cause his/her death and/or an inconvenience for the
rest of the passengers and crew; however nothing (or almost nothing)
will be destroyed. If you owned a cruise ship would you risk letting a
single person who smokes burning your investment to ruin and
subjecting you to millions of losses in law suites not to mention the
potential of the loss many lives of innocent people. Let's face it
smoking is dangerous....check out:

So how is that different from people who smoke in a hotel or a big office
building?

Drive a car. Walk down the street. Take a shower. People die doing these
things every day... life is fraught with danger. (HA! Not every day you get
to use the word "fraught".)

By all accounts, smoking is not a good thing. I don't smoke but that is my
decision for myself. I'll let others make the decision for themselves. I
hope everyone quits because I know what it is like to watch someone die from
cancer, but again, that is their decision.

BTW - here in good old Shreveport, LA (that's Louisiana, not Los Angeles) -
the local politicos are considering passing a law making it illegal for
people to wear "sagging pants" that expose their underwear.
http://tinyurl.com/yohlxn

Helmet laws. Seat belt laws. Smoking laws. Now laws about how someone
wears their pants.

Doesn't the government have better things to do?

You can walk a away from a hotel or a big office block.

Really? Then explain why between 2000 and 2005, over 175 people died in
hotel fires? http://www.crowddynamics.com/Disasters/hotel_fires.htm

Didn't they know they could just walk away?

But smokers also fail to realise that cigarette smoke tastes and
smells abhorrent to non-smokers (who generally out number smokers by 7
to 3).
Perhaps if I shat in your mouth you could understand the effect.

Well if the local Holiday Inn burns, the FD is a lot closer and
you don't have to walk on water to get away should the fire get
completely out of hand.

Generally speaking, I am much more comfortable with governments doing
things like this that what they might do if they ever got caught up with
the mundane. Sorta like I would prefer to keep a Mastiff busy with a
chew toy instead of my leg.
I leave with these words..
"Distracting a politician from governing is like distracting a
bear from eating your baby."

Of course, since this was originally a discussion on the fact
that alcohol is ALSO able to hurt others, not just yourself, don't you
think this going a little far afield?
