17 yr old jailed after holiday flirt in Turkey
http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/justi...490156,00.html
(German only, could not find an English version) Already two months in a Turkish jail for flirting with a British girl. Not because Turkey is Islamic - because the parents of the girl denounced him for sexually abusing their daughter. The article does not say what this 17 yr old exactly did, but I would assume that it wasn't rape otherwise the article would have explicitely mentioned it. The boy claims the 13 yr old girl told him she was already 15. -- Alfred Molon http://www.molon.de - Photos of Asia, Africa and Europe |

(Unless he insisted upon seeing her passport, how could he know for sure?) |

The boy claims the 13 yr old girl told him she was already 15. -- Alfred Molonhttp://www.molon.de- Photos of Asia, Africa and Europe http://news.independent.co.uk/europe/article2705318.ece Germany demands release of boy held in Turkish jail for two months By Tony Paterson in Berlin Published: 25 June 2007 Germany and Turkey are heading for a diplomatic row after Berlin formally demanded the immediate release of a 17-year-old German schoolboy held for more than two months in a Turkish jail allegedly for merely kissing and flirting with a 13-year-old British girl. Marco Weiss, from the German town of Uelzen, has been held since early April over allegations that he had sexually molested a girl from Manchester, referred to as Charlotte M. Both were on holiday in the southern Turkish resort town of Side. The German media published reports yesterday that Marco was being held in a jail with a single lavatory, which he had to share with about 30 other prisoners, in the town of Antalya. He was waiting to appear before a court at a hearing which had been postponed until 6 July. His parents, who were in Antalya, said that they were allowed to see their son only once a week, when they were separated from him by a glass screen. The German government issued a diplomatic note to Turkey demanding the schoolboy's immediate release from prison. Peter Struck, the family's MP, said: "I am shocked by the conditions under which he is being held and by the way that this matter is being dealt with by the Turkish authorities. He should be released immediately." German reports said that the 13-year-old British girl's mother had demanded that police intervene and arrest Marco. They said she was seeking to prosecute the boy on charges that he had sexually molested her daughter. However, the boy's parents insisted that their son had merely kissed and flirted with the girl, who had claimed to be 15 years old. They said her 14-year-old sister was on the balcony of the same hotel room at the time. There was no immediate Turkish government response to Germany's demands. However, an editorial in the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet said the German government was "insulting the Turkish justice system". |

OTOH if rejection of Turkey is merely a racial thing as it seems to be, then it doesn't matter what Turks do. I don't think the abduction of a child in Greece was by a legal process, though. Rejection of Turkey's application is not racially motivated, it's simply because Turkey does not meet basic standards of respect for human rights and international law. B; |

Yeah right and Bulgaria, Rumania etc. do? Respect of International law means not invading Cyprus to stop those of Turkish descent being murdered? In EU terms, the invasion of Cyprus is hardly on the radar nowadays. What _is_ is the ongoing dispute over whether Cyprus would allow EU trading with North Cyprus (Cyprus blocked the move when it was last tried), and whether Turkey agrees to open its ports etc. to Cyprus. Regardless of the rights or wrongs on both sides here, no EU country will accept a situation where one member doesn't recognise another. Cyprus got 'in the door' first... Racism probably has something to do with it. EU members are opposed to Turkey joining, with Hungary, UK, and the Iberian peninsula being more supportive- Hungary is the only one that edges over 50% support. That could likely change in the next few years though, in Turkey's favour. The real sticking points may not even be Cyprus- Austria supports the entry of Turkey even _less_ than Cyprus (10% as opposed to 15%) and they've promised to put it to a national referendum. France and Germany support the entry of Turkey even less than Greece! -- (*) ... of the royal duchy of city south and deansgate http://www.davidhorne.net - real address on website "Abominable, loyal, blind, apparently subservient."
